This medication is used to treat osteoporosis commonly occurring in postmenopausal women. It helps to increase bone density, enhance bone strength, and reduce the risk of fractures. Therefore, it is effective in preventing fractures due to osteoporosis and maintaining bone health.

How it is given

Adult administration

Administer 3mg intravenously once every 3 months over 15 - 30 seconds.

Precautions

This medication must be administered intravenously, as administration into arteries or around veins may cause tissue damage. Patients with a known allergy to this medication or its components, as well as those with untreated hypocalcemia, should not use this drug. Potential side effects during use may include gastrointestinal issues, muscle pain, joint pain, fatigue, headaches, and rashes, which are mostly mild to moderate. Some patients have reported transient influenza-like symptoms, vasculitis, hypersensitivity reactions, and severe skin reactions. Osteonecrosis of the jaw can occur rarely, so cancer patients or those with poor oral hygiene should receive dental care beforehand and avoid excessive dental treatment while under therapy. Patients receiving this medication should ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, and regular check-ups are necessary if they have renal function issues or other diseases. If pain in the thigh or groin occurs, the possibility of atypical fractures should be suspected, and consultation with a physician is recommended. It is safer for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to use this medication, and the safety for children under 18 years old has not been established. Caution is needed as overdose may affect kidney and liver functions, and if overdose is suspected, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is required. This medication should not be mixed with calcium-containing solutions or other intravenous drugs and must only be administered by intravenous injection. After use, the syringe and needle should not be reused and should be disposed of safely.
