Treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers and gastritis
This medication is used for gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, and excess gastric acid-related conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It also helps in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and is administered to prevent Mendelson's syndrome during preoperative anesthesia. It supports ulcer healing post-surgery as well and is effective in treating gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This medication is used effectively for various gastrointestinal diseases, improving patients' gastric health.
Typically administered orally as 2 tablets twice a day, independent of meals, before breakfast and bedtime. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers Administer 2 tablets twice a day or 4 tablets once daily before bedtime. Particularly for patients with duodenal ulcers, administering 4 tablets twice a day at breakfast and bedtime can yield higher success rates. For ulcers or long-term administration caused by NSAIDs.
This medication should not be used by patients undergoing dialysis. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or any of its components should not take it. Patients with a rare blood condition called acute porphyria should avoid this medication as it may trigger seizures. Patients with poor renal function or kidney disorders should also refrain from using this medication. Patients who have had gastric surgery should avoid using this medication. It is safest for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant to avoid this medication. This medication should not be administered to premature infants or neonates. Patients on a dietary regimen that restricts potassium intake should not use this medication. Patients with impaired liver function, history of drug allergies, elderly patients, and those with a history of kidney disorders should use this medication with caution. When taken in conjunction with NSAIDs, regular monitoring is necessary, especially for elderly patients or those with a history of gastric ulcers. This medication can mask symptoms of gastric cancer, so patients with gastric ulcers or new dyspeptic symptoms who are 40 years or older should confirm malignancy prior to treatment. For patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers who test positive for Helicobacter pylori, bactericidal treatment is necessary. Patients in critical care units may face risks of gastric stone formation, thus require caution. Patients with hypophosphatemia should take care as the components of this medication may impede phosphate absorption. Patients with swallowing difficulties may experience respiratory complications after administration of this medication. Rarely, severe allergic reactions like anaphylactic shock can occur; should symptoms arise, discontinue the use of the medication immediately and seek medical help. Allergic symptoms such as rashes, urticaria, angioedema, fever, and respiratory distress may also occur, requiring cessation of the medication. Blood tests may reveal rare abnormalities such as leukopenia and thrombocytopenia; if symptoms like fatigue, bleeding, or fever occur, testing and treatment are required. Liver dysfunction can occur rarely; if jaundice or hepatitis symptoms arise, discontinue the medication immediately. Irregular heartbeat or arrhythmias have been reported very rarely, making caution necessary for patients with cardiovascular diseases. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur, with potential for changing stool color which does not necessitate special treatment. Elderly patients or those severely ill may exhibit neurological abnormalities such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, or seizures and thus require observation. Endocrine abnormalities such as gynecomastia, excessive milk secretion, or erectile dysfunction have also been reported rarely. Myalgia or arthralgia may occur, and in severe cases, muscle damage like rhabdomyolysis can happen, necessitating discontinuation if symptoms are severe. Skin rashes, hair loss, and pruritus may occur rarely. Long-term use is not recommended; if no therapeutic effect is observed, it is advisable to switch to another medication. Elderly patients or those with chronic pulmonary disease, diabetes, or weakened immune systems may have an increased risk of pneumonia when taking this medication; caution should be exercised. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs during use, avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery. This medication can interact with other drugs, especially anticoagulants, so it is important to follow a physician's instructions when taking them together. Taking with some drugs may affect absorption, so dosing intervals may need adjustment. It is safest for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding to avoid this medication. The safety of this medication for children has not been sufficiently established, so it is not recommended for pediatric use. Overdose may require emergency treatments such as vomiting or gastric lavage; if necessary, the medication can be removed via blood dialysis. This medication reduces gastric acid secretion, which may promote bacterial proliferation in the gastrointestinal tract; therefore, regular check-ups, including eye examinations, are advised with long-term use.
