This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used as monotherapy for initial treatment, and if blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy, it may be used in combination with metformin. Additionally, if adequate control is not achieved with monotherapy of sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin, this medication can be used additionally. When blood sugar control is difficult with other combination therapies, this medication may also be used to enhance treatment effectiveness. This medication helps improve blood sugar control at various treatment stages.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered once daily at a dose of 100 mg either as monotherapy or in combination therapy, with a maximum daily dose of 100 mg. For patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment is not necessary for mild to moderate renal impairment (eGFR ≥ 45 mL/min/1.73 m2). For moderate renal impairment (eGFR ≥ 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 and < 45 mL/min/1.73 m2), a dose of 50 mg is administered once daily.

Precautions

This medication can cause severe allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as skin rash or difficulty breathing occur after taking the medication, it should be discontinued immediately and a doctor should be consulted. Also, acute pancreatitis, a serious inflammation of the pancreas, may occur, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea appear, medical personnel should be notified immediately. It should not be administered to patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, nor should it be used in case of an allergy to this medication or its ingredients. Patients with decreased kidney function should adjust the dose of this medication, and it is important to regularly check kidney function before and during treatment. Hypoglycemic symptoms may occur while taking this medication, so caution is especially needed when used in combination with other hypoglycemic agents such as insulin or sulfonylureas, and the dose of those medications should be adjusted as necessary. Side effects such as headaches, upper respiratory infections, nasopharyngitis, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, vomiting, myalgia, limb pain, back pain, pruritus, thrombocytopenia, dyspepsia, dizziness, increased blood triglycerides, increased low-density lipoprotein, hyperglycemia, weight loss, hypertension, hypernatremia, and erectile dysfunction may occur in some patients. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to take this medication, and safety and effectiveness have not been established for children under the age of 18. Elderly patients should be carefully evaluated for kidney function due to the potential for decreased kidney function, and regular kidney function testing is necessary. In case of overdose, general symptomatic treatment is provided, and some may be removed through dialysis, which should be considered if necessary. This medication has relatively few drug interactions, but caution is needed when used with digoxin or cyclosporine, and it is essential to consult with healthcare professionals regarding any other medications being taken. If severe joint pain or skin blistering occurs, the medication should be stopped immediately and a specialist should be consulted. The cardiovascular safety of this medication has been confirmed, but it is important to inform healthcare personnel of any unusual symptoms while taking this medication.
