Efficacy & effects

Improvement of Type 2 Diabetes (Blood Sugar Control)

  • Blood sugar control issues in patients with Type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used along with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It may also be used alone, but if its effectiveness is insufficient after using other blood sugar-lowering agents, it can be combined with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. Additionally, nutritional counseling, weight loss, and regular exercise are crucial for patients with Type 2 diabetes. Such lifestyle improvements help maintain the effectiveness of medication therapy for a long time in addition to initial treatment. This medication is used to help patients effectively control their blood sugar.

Precautions

This medication is used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, helping to control blood sugar by improving insulin resistance. When taking this medication, there is a risk of congestive heart failure, which may put stress on the heart, so patients should be closely monitored for symptoms of heart failure such as changes in weight, shortness of breath, and swelling after starting treatment. It is safest for patients with a history of heart failure or current heart failure symptoms to avoid this medication. This medication may cause fluid retention, which can lead to swelling or worsening of heart failure; thus, patients should consult healthcare providers immediately if swelling symptoms occur. Patients with bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer should not take this medication, and they should inform their doctor immediately if they experience hematuria or urinary problems. Patients with poor liver function or severely impaired kidney function should also refrain from taking this medication. Patients should have regular blood sugar and liver function tests while taking this medication and report any unusual symptoms to their healthcare providers promptly. There is a risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, when taking insulin or other blood sugar-lowering medications together, patients should be cautious of hypoglycemic symptoms and adjust doses of other medications as needed. Pre-menopausal women should use appropriate contraception, as this medication may stimulate ovulation and increase the likelihood of pregnancy. Elderly patients, especially those over 75 years old, require more careful monitoring when taking this medication. In case of overdose, specific symptoms may not be present, but it is essential to consult a healthcare provider immediately for appropriate treatment. This medication has not been established for safety and efficacy in children; thus, it should not be used in this age group. When taking this medication, keep it out of reach of children and store it in its original container.
