Treatment for hypercholesterolemia (primary, familial) and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is primarily used for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia. It is used as an adjunct in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed hyperlipidemia not adequately controlled by diet and exercise alone. Furthermore, it aids patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia and dysbetalipoproteinemia as a supplement to dietary therapy. This drug lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, effectively slowing the progression of atherosclerosis. It is also suitable for pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years with familial hypercholesterolemia and is used to reduce the risks of stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization in adults at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Overall, this medication helps improve lipid levels and maintain cardiovascular health.
This medication can be taken at any time of day without regard to meals. The initial dosage is 5 mg once daily, and if a greater reduction in LDL-cholesterol is necessary, it can be adjusted to the maintenance dosage. The maintenance dosage is typically adjusted to 10 mg once daily for most patients. The maintenance dosage should be appropriately adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or longer based on LDL-cholesterol levels, therapeutic goals, and patient response.
The usual dosage range is from 5 mg to 20 mg once daily. The dosing should be individually adjusted based on the therapeutic goals recommended for each patient. Dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or longer.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. Patients who are allergic to any component of this medication should not take it. Patients with severely impaired liver function or liver disease may be at risk if they use this medication. Patients with muscle disorders or issues with muscles should avoid this drug. Patients taking the immunosuppressant cyclosporine should also refrain from using this medication. Patients with severely impaired kidney function should not take this medication, nor should pregnant or breastfeeding women. Women of childbearing potential should use reliable contraception and can only use this medication if they are fully aware of the risks to the fetus. High-dose use is prohibited for patients at high risk of muscle-related side effects. Patients with genetic metabolic disorders such as lactose intolerance should also avoid this medication. Additionally, patients with a history of liver disease or those who consume excessive alcohol should undergo regular liver function tests while using this medication. If symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur, it is important to inform medical personnel immediately, and the use of the medication should be discontinued if necessary. Patients at risk of muscle damage should undergo blood tests before and during treatment to monitor their muscle condition. The use of this medication should be suspended in cases of acute severe illness or conditions at risk for rapid deterioration of kidney function. This medication can rarely cause severe muscle weakness, so if such symptoms appear, the use should be halted immediately. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medications. Particularly, caution is needed when combined with specific antiviral agents, immunosuppressants, antibiotics, and lipid-lowering agents that increase the risk of muscle damage. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medication, and women of childbearing potential must practice appropriate contraception. In cases of overdose, as there is no specific antidote, immediate medical treatment is necessary, and liver function and muscle damage should be assessed. This medication is not believed to significantly impact driving or operating machinery, but caution is advised as dizziness may occur. This medication can rarely lead to serious skin reactions or liver damage, so if symptoms such as skin rash or jaundice occur, the use should be discontinued immediately and a doctor should be consulted.
