This medication is used to prevent and continuously treat asthma. It is also effective in relieving symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Thus, it helps to reduce discomfort caused by asthma and allergic rhinitis, and to manage symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily. This medication is to be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet, 1 package, or 1 strip in the evening once daily.

Child dose

Children aged 6-14 years should take 5 mg of montelukast once daily, to chew or dissolve on the tongue without water. Children aged 4-5 years should take 4 mg of montelukast once daily to chew or dissolve on the tongue.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which is broken down into phenylalanine in the body. Thus, patients with the hereditary disease phenylketonuria should not take this medication. This medication contains lactose, so it should not be administered to patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. This medication is primarily used for patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis, and its safety and efficacy have been confirmed in clinical trials across various age groups. However, some patients may experience a variety of adverse reactions such as weakness, fatigue, headache, dyspepsia, rash, cough, and others, so they should consult a physician if symptoms occur. This medication is not intended for use during acute asthma attacks, and an emergency inhaler should always be ready during asthma exacerbations. During treatment, neuropsychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and behavior changes may occur, so any changes should be reported to healthcare providers immediately. If there is a history of hypersensitivity to aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, they should be avoided while taking this medication. During the course of treatment, the dosage of inhaled corticosteroids should be adjusted according to doctor's instructions, as abrupt withdrawal or changes may be dangerous. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, due to insufficient data on the safety of this medication, it should be administered only after consulting a physician. Children and elderly patients can also use this medication, but particular attention should be paid to the age and dosage in children, and safety has not been established for children under 6 months of age. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so if overdose is suspected, appropriate treatment should be sought at a medical facility immediately. This medication is sensitive to light, so it should be opened just before use, and taken immediately after opening.
