Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. It is not to be administered to patients allergic to any component or excipient of this medication, those with low phosphate levels in the blood, or patients with intestinal obstruction or blockage. Additionally, this medication contains lactose, thus patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take it. Patients with narrowed intestines or severe constipation should use this medication with caution, as it can expand in the intestines and pose a risk of intestinal obstruction or perforation. Taking this medication may lead to gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. Especially, patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis should report any symptoms immediately to healthcare professionals due to an increased risk of peritonitis. If severe constipation, persistent abdominal pain, or vomiting occur, this medication should be discontinued and appropriate treatment sought. Patients with dysphagia should consider using a powder form of the medication instead. This medication does not contain calcium; thus, regular monitoring of blood calcium levels is necessary, and calcium supplements should be taken if needed. Patients with chronic kidney disease may have reduced levels of fat-soluble vitamins and folic acid, so regular blood tests should confirm vitamin status, and supplements should be taken if necessary. This medication may interfere with the absorption of other oral medications, so it should be taken at least 1 hour prior or 3 hours after taking other medications, and monitoring blood concentrations is important. Pregnant women should use this medication only when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks to the fetus. For nursing mothers, it is uncertain whether this medication is excreted in breast milk, so the benefits of breastfeeding and medication treatment should be weighed. It is not recommended for use in children under 18 years as safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients generally do not require special dosage adjustments, but it is advisable to start cautiously and monitor. There have been no specific reports of overdose, but adherence to the recommended dosage is essential. This medication must be taken with meals, and the tablets should be swallowed whole without chewing or crushing. It is crucial to store it in a dry place away from moisture. Caution is needed when taking this medication with specific drugs (e.g., ciprofloxacin) as it may reduce the effectiveness of the medications. Furthermore, patients taking levothyroxine should have regular thyroid function tests. Dialysis patients are at risk of infection, and especially those undergoing peritoneal dialysis should carefully monitor for symptoms of peritonitis and receive appropriate sterile treatment.
