Effectively improves hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases
This medication is primarily used as an adjunct for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia when dietary measures and exercise are insufficient. It also assists patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia alongside dietary changes or other lipid-lowering therapies. This drug lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis, and is also beneficial for treating patients with dysbetalipoproteinemia. It is effective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, especially in middle-aged patients with high levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and additional risk factors, helping to reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization procedures. Therefore, this medication is used for hyperlipidemia and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
The initial dose is 5 mg once daily, and if further reduction of LDL cholesterol is needed, it can be adjusted to a maintenance dose. The maintenance dose is usually 10 mg once daily, and most patients are controlled at this dose. The maintenance dose should be adjusted appropriately at intervals of 4 weeks or longer according to the LDL cholesterol levels, treatment goals, and patient response, with a maximum daily dose of 20 mg.
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, individuals who are allergic to any component of this medication, those with active liver disease, patients with muscle disorders, individuals with severe renal impairment, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication. Furthermore, those susceptible to muscle disorders should avoid high doses, and patients with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance should not use this drug. Regular liver function tests are necessary before and during treatment with this medication, and individuals who consume alcohol heavily or have a history of liver disease should exercise caution. If symptoms such as myalgia, muscle weakness, or myopathy occur, the physician should be notified immediately, and in severe cases, the medication should be discontinued. Patients at risk of severe muscle weakness or rhabdomyolysis should exercise particular caution, and the risk of muscle-related side effects may increase with concomitant medications. This medication interacts with certain drugs, increasing blood concentrations, so it must be discussed with a physician when used in combination with other medications. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication, and women of childbearing potential should use appropriate contraception. There is no specific antidote for overdose; treatment should be based on symptoms, and liver function and muscle enzyme levels should be carefully monitored. Additionally, dizziness may occur during treatment, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. This drug may show higher blood concentrations in Asians; thus, dosage adjustments may be necessary. Lastly, rare, severe adverse events like skin rashes, liver function abnormalities, and nervous system disorders can occur while taking this medication, so immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is required if any abnormal symptoms appear.
