Treatment of herpes zoster, treatment of genital herpes and suppression of recurrence
This medicine is used to treat herpes zoster virus infections and genital herpes infections. It also helps prevent the occurrence of recurrent genital herpes.
1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer famciclovir 250 mg orally per dose, 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of initial genital herpes infection Adults: Administer this drug 250 mg orally per dose, 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection Adults: Administer this drug 125 mg orally per dose, twice daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal period or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer this drug 250 mg orally per dose, twice daily. Interrupt treatment periodically every 6~12 months to assess whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Because creatinine clearance of this drug is reduced in patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment should be undertaken with caution. The dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and initial genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29 250 mg per dose, once daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 125 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, once daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose, twice daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, twice daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formula. Men: {body weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis For patients on hemodialysis, it is preferable to administer this drug every 48 hours, taking the dialysis interval into account. Four hours of hemodialysis reduces the plasma concentration of this drug by approximately 75%; therefore, administer this drug immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, a clear recommended dose has not been established.
This medication should not be used by individuals allergic to this drug or its components. Additionally, this drug contains lactose, so people with a genetic disorder that impairs lactose digestion should not take it. Patients with impaired kidney function should use this drug with caution and may need dose adjustments. During treatment, symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting may occur, most of which are mild to moderate. Skin rashes or itching, and rarely severe skin reactions may occur, so if any unusual symptoms develop, consult a doctor immediately. This drug does not cure genital herpes, so it is important to avoid sexual intercourse if symptoms are present even during treatment and to maintain safe sexual practices. If you feel dizzy or drowsy while taking this medication, it is advisable to avoid driving or operating machinery. Patients with slightly decreased liver function do not need special dose adjustments, but those with severe liver disease may experience reduced efficacy. This drug can interact with other medications, so if you are taking other drugs, be sure to inform your healthcare provider. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the benefits and risks of using this drug, as should breastfeeding women. Children under 18 should ideally not use this medication as its safety and efficacy have not been established. Generally, the elderly do not need dose adjustments, but if renal function is decreased, dosage adjustments are required. In cases of overdose, appropriate treatment is necessary, and hemodialysis can reduce the concentration of the active ingredient in this drug. This medication should be stored in a dry place below 30 degrees Celsius and kept out of reach of children; it is also advisable not to transfer it to another container.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This drug should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent exposure to air or moisture. Additionally, it is important to store it in a dry place at or below 30 degrees Celsius. Storing it this way will help maintain the drug's efficacy and safety for a longer period.
