Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status
Patients receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) require zinc supplementation. Zinc is an essential mineral for various metabolic processes and immune functions in the body, and deficiencies can occur during TPN, making supplementation crucial. This prevents problems such as growth delay and reduced immunity due to zinc deficiency. Therefore, zinc supplementation helps maintain health and aids recovery during total parenteral nutrition.
Metabolically stable TPN patients: 2.5 to 4 mg/day Adults with fluid losses in the small intestine: an additional 12.2 mg/L (fluid loss amount) or an additional 17.1 mg/kg (excretion amount) Acute burn condition: 4.5 to 6 mg/day Use as directed by a physician, adjusting dosage based on plasma trace element levels.
Children under 5 years: 100 ug/kg/day Premature infants weighing 3 kg or less: 300 ug/kg/day
This medication should not be injected directly into a peripheral vein in an undiluted state. Direct injection may cause inflammation of the vein or kidney damage due to zinc. The amount of zinc included in this medication is very small, so typically toxic symptoms do not occur. When mixing this medication with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solutions, it is advisable to work in a sterile laminar flow environment to maintain aseptic conditions. Before injection, the solution should be visually checked for any precipitation or discoloration. Zinc and copper can affect each other; therefore, when administering zinc, it may reduce serum copper levels, necessitating regular monitoring of blood copper concentrations. This medication is excreted from the body via the small intestine and kidneys, so patients with kidney or small bowel dysfunction should be cautious of potential zinc accumulation in the body. For pregnant women or women of childbearing age, this medication should only be used if the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. Zinc can cross the placenta and may be present in breast milk, so pregnant and lactating women should use it cautiously. Excessive zinc intake can lead to serious symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, dizziness, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and motor coordination disorders, so caution is necessary. Calcium intake has been reported to help prevent toxicity due to excessive zinc. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in a dry place at room temperature in its original packaging. Additionally, since no preservatives are included, it is safer to discard any unused medication.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent exposure to air and moisture. It is important to maintain a storage temperature between 1°C and 30°C. This helps to safely preserve the effectiveness of the medication.
