Treatment of psychiatric disorders (depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder), bulimia nervosa, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder
This medication is effectively used for various mental health disorders such as depression, bulimia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. In patients with depression, this medication helps improve symptoms within approximately 5-6 weeks and contributes to the restoration of daily functioning. In patients with bulimia nervosa, it reduces binge-eating and purging behaviors, while in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, it alleviates obsessive symptoms and improves the quality of social and work life. Additionally, it eases emotional instability and physical discomfort related to premenstrual dysphoric disorder, enhancing quality of life. However, it is important to continuously evaluate the effectiveness and safety of long-term administration of this medication for individual patients. This medication is used to improve symptoms of these disorders.
Depression Initial treatment: The initial dose is fluoxetine hydrochloride 20mg orally once daily in the morning. Doses of 20~80mg per day were used in controlled clinical trials. If improvement is not observed, an increase in dose may be considered after several weeks. Doses exceeding 20mg per day should be administered twice daily (morning and noon), and the maximum dose of 80mg per day should not be exceeded. The onset of an adequate antidepressant effect may be delayed until 4 weeks of treatment or later. Maintenance/continuation/extended treatment: There are no definitive data on how long patients should be treated with this medicine; however, psychopharmacologists agree that acute episodes of depression require several months or more of drug therapy. It is not known whether the amount of antidepressant needed to relieve symptoms is the same as that needed to maintain or sustain stability. Bulimia nervosa Administer 60mg of this medicine daily. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. Measure electrolyte levels before starting treatment. Obsessive-compulsive disorder Administer 20~60mg of this medicine daily. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder Administer 20mg of this medicine daily. Reassess the need for continued treatment after 6 months of treatment. Patients with renal and/or hepatic impairment, patients receiving multiple medications, older adults, and patients with comorbidities: Administer a lower dose or reduce the frequency of administration. Adjust the dose appropriately according to age and symptoms. Switching from MAO inhibitors used to treat psychiatric disorders When discontinuing an MAO inhibitor used to treat psychiatric disorders and starting treatment with this medicine, allow an interval of at least 14 days. Conversely, at least 5 weeks must elapse after discontinuing this medicine before starting an MAO inhibitor to treat psychiatric disorders. Other MAO inhibitors, such as linezolid or methylene blue Patients receiving linezolid or intravenous methylene blue should not start treatment with this medicine because of the increased risk of serotonin syndrome. For patients requiring more urgent treatment of a psychiatric condition, including hospitalization and other interventional procedures, treatment should be considered. It may be necessary to urgently administer linezolid or intravenous methylene blue to a patient already receiving this medicine. If no alternative to linezolid or intravenous methylene blue is available and, for a particular patient, the benefits of treatment with linezolid or intravenous methylene blue are judged to outweigh the risk of serotonin syndrome, discontinue this medicine immediately and administer linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. Monitor the patient for symptoms of serotonin syndrome for 5 weeks after administration of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue, or for 24 hours after the last dose, whichever comes first. Treatment with this medicine may be restarted 24 hours after the last dose of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. The risk associated with administration of methylene blue by non-intravenous routes (oral tablets or local injection), or with intravenous administration of this medicine at doses of 1mg/kg or less, is unclear. Nevertheless, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of emergency symptoms of serotonin syndrome with these uses.

Patients with a history of seizures should use this medication cautiously and discontinue treatment immediately if seizures occur or worsen. If there are any changes in mental status such as suicidal thoughts or actions, aggression, anxiety, or insomnia, family members or caregivers should closely monitor and consult a physician. Patients with heart disease or those with abnormal electrocardiograms should have an electrocardiogram before taking this medication, and seek immediate medical attention if any heart-related symptoms occur during treatment. Patients with liver or kidney function impairment may require dose adjustments, and diabetic patients should frequently check blood glucose levels as this medication may affect blood sugar control. This medication can cause dilation of the pupils, and those with high intraocular pressure or a risk of glaucoma should use it carefully.
