This medication is used in the treatment of gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease. Additionally, it is effective in relieving the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease and for long-term maintenance therapy. It aids in the treatment of gastrointestinal ulcers in patients infected with Helicobacter pylori when used in combination with antibiotics. It is also used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome by controlling gastric acid secretion to improve symptoms. In summary, this drug is widely used for various gastrointestinal disorders and conditions related to excessive gastric acid.

How to take

Adult dose

For gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers: take 10 mg orally once daily. Depending on symptoms, 20 mg may be taken once daily. For erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease: take 10 mg or 20 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. If unresolved after 8 weeks of proton pump inhibitor treatment, an additional 10 mg or 20 mg may be taken orally twice daily for another 8 weeks.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with allergies to certain drugs or ingredients. For instance, individuals with hypersensitivity to this drug or to benzimidazole compounds, or those with a history of such reactions, should not take it. Various side effects related to the heart, gastrointestinal system, nervous system, respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, skin, eyes, and urogenital system have been reported, and if any abnormal symptoms occur, it is essential to consult a doctor immediately. Long-term use of this medication may increase the risk of fractures related to osteoporosis, and hypomagnesemia may occur; thus, it is advisable to regularly monitor magnesium levels during prolonged treatment. As this medication suppresses gastric acid secretion, there may be a slight increase in the risk of bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal tract, and if diarrhea persists, it should be reported to a healthcare provider. Caution is advised while driving or operating machinery due to the risk of drowsiness.
