How to take

Adult dose

Adults and children aged 12 years or older or weighing 40 kg or more should take amoxicillin/clavulanic acid potassium at a dosage of 250 mg/125 mg orally three times daily every 8 hours. In severe infections and respiratory infections, the dosage may be increased to 500 mg/125 mg. For patients with renal impairment, dosage must be adjusted based on creatinine clearance. For those with a creatinine clearance of 10 to 30 mL/min, take 250 to 500 mg of amoxicillin every 12 hours.

Precautions

This drug should not be administered to patients with hypersensitivity to beta-lactam antibiotics, particularly those with a history of anaphylaxis or severe skin reactions. Caution is needed when administering to patients with viral infections such as infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia, as the risk of rash may increase. Patients with liver function issues or a history of jaundice or hepatic impairment due to this drug or penicillin should avoid use due to recurrence risk. Patients with liver impairment should use this drug cautiously, as it may worsen liver function. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment should adjust dosing intervals since the drug may remain in the body longer, increasing the risk of side effects. Allergy-prone patients or those with a family history should be monitored closely during administration. Patients experiencing severe vomiting or diarrhea may not absorb the medication properly, requiring caution. This medication can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea, gastric discomfort, nausea, and vomiting; in severe cases, serious conditions like pseudomembranous colitis may occur, necessitating immediate discontinuation. Rarely, liver function abnormalities may appear, particularly in the elderly and males, so regular liver function tests are recommended. Skin rashes, itching, and severe skin reactions may occur, requiring immediate discontinuation and doctor consultation. Blood abnormalities including leukopenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia may develop, warranting testing upon any abnormal symptoms. Central nervous system abnormalities such as anxiety, dizziness, and seizures may arise, particularly in cases of renal impairment or high-dose administration. Regular kidney testing is necessary, and administration should cease if abnormalities are found. This medication may disrupt gut bacterial balance, leading to dysbiosis such as candidiasis, requiring appropriate measures if symptoms occur. There is a risk of bleeding tendency due to vitamin K deficiency with prolonged use. Long-term use of this drug may lead to resistant bacteria; therefore, it is important to use it for only the minimum necessary duration. Severe allergic reactions including anaphylactic shock can occur in cases of hypersensitivity, so careful monitoring post-administration and preparedness for emergencies is essential. Pregnant or nursing women should use this drug only when necessary due to potential effects on the fetus or infant, particularly avoiding it during the first trimester. Pediatric use in children under 12 years or weighing less than 40 kg is not recommended due to insufficient experience. Elderly patients are at higher risk for bleeding due to renal impairment and vitamin K deficiency, necessitating attention to dosage and dosing intervals. This medication may interact with other drugs, so patients should consult their healthcare provider when taking concurrent medications, especially with anticoagulants, anti-inflammatory drugs, and oral contraceptives. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal symptoms, kidney failure, seizures, or hypersensitivity shock may occur, requiring immediate medical attention. This drug should be stored in a dry place at a temperature below 25 degrees Celsius, and it is crucial to take it exactly as prescribed and directed by a physician.
