Improvement in blood sugar control and weight management
This medication is used to assist in blood sugar management for adult patients with type 2 diabetes when dietary and exercise regimens alone are insufficient, particularly for individuals who are overweight. It may be taken alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin to enhance therapeutic effects. This helps to effectively control blood sugar levels and aids in diabetes treatment.
The usual initial dosage is 500mg of Metformin Hydrochloride Extended-Release tablets taken once daily with dinner. After one week, blood sugar levels should be measured to adjust the dosage. When increasing the dosage, it should be increased by 500mg weekly, with a maximum daily dose of up to 2000mg taken with dinner. If blood sugar control is not achieved with the maximum daily dose of 2000mg, a consideration for taking 1000mg twice daily may be appropriate.
This medication can rarely cause a serious condition known as lactic acidosis, which can endanger life. When used in combination with other diabetes medications, hypoglycemic symptoms may occur, so caution is needed. It should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, those who are dehydrated, or those experiencing acute conditions such as severe infections, acute myocardial infarction, sepsis, etc. Patients with unstable heart failure or those undergoing tests involving iodinated contrast agents should not use this medication. It is also contraindicated in patients who have allergies to any components of this medication, in patients with type 1 diabetes, and those with metabolic acidosis. Patients experiencing severe infections or serious trauma that may affect their generalized condition should temporarily cease medication, and discontinuation is advised for a certain period before and after surgery. Use should be avoided in patients with extremely poor nutritional status, liver dysfunction, or excessive alcohol consumption. Pregnant women at risk of placental dysfunction or preeclampsia should avoid using this medication. Careful consideration should be given when administering this medication to patients with irregular meals, excessive exercise, or who are taking interacting medications. While taking this medication, side effects such as vitamin B12 deficiency, gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.), and skin rashes may occur, therefore caution is necessary. Gastrointestinal disturbances, in particular, commonly appear in the early stages of treatment and may be alleviated by gradually increasing the dose or taking it with food. Monitoring renal function is very important and if renal function worsens, medication should be discontinued. Alcohol can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so excessive drinking should be avoided while on this medication. Because it can interact with other drugs, patients should inform their physician or pharmacist about any medications they are currently taking. Blood sugar control is crucial during pregnancy as this medication crosses the placenta, so pregnant women should consult with their doctor before use. If breastfeeding, a careful decision needs to be made regarding whether to continue breastfeeding as this medication is excreted in breast milk. Safety in pediatric patients has not been established, and it is not recommended for those under 17 years of age. Elderly patients are at higher risk of renal function decline, therefore dosage adjustment and regular renal function monitoring are necessary. In cases of overdose, blood dialysis may be necessary, and immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication should not be crushed or chewed; it should be swallowed whole, and the tablet shell may appear in stool, which is normal. Regular blood glucose monitoring and renal function assessment should be conducted during treatment to verify therapeutic effectiveness and safety.
Lactic acidosis (acute and potentially fatal possibilities)
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
