Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used for adult patients with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar control is insufficient with diet and exercise alone, especially in those who are overweight. It can be used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemics or insulin as needed to effectively assist in blood sugar control.
The dosing should be determined based on the individual's response and tolerance to the medication, and should not exceed the recommended maximum daily dosage. The typical initial dose is 500mg of metformin hydrochloride controlled-release tablet administered once daily with the evening meal. After one week, blood sugar levels should be measured to adjust the dosage, with a maximum dose of 2000mg per day. When increasing the dosage, it can be increased by 500mg weekly up to a maximum of 2000mg with the evening meal.
This medication helps lower blood sugar and is used in diabetes treatment. However, it may rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, so caution is needed. When used in conjunction with insulin or other diabetes medications, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so care should be taken. This medication should not be used in patients with severely impaired kidney function, dehydration, severe infection, acute heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction. Additionally, it should be temporarily discontinued if iodinated contrast media used in certain tests are administered, and it should not be given to patients with liver dysfunction or during pregnancy if there are specific risks. Patients with irregular or insufficient food intake, those engaged in intense exercise, or those who may have interactions with other medications should use this drug cautiously. While taking this drug, gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.) are common, and vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, so regular blood tests are necessary. Rarely, skin rashes or allergic reactions may appear, and if any unusual symptoms occur, inform healthcare personnel. Regular monitoring of kidney function should be done to manage medication accumulation in the body, and if acute renal impairment is suspected, medication should be stopped immediately. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is advisable to avoid it. During pregnancy, this medication may affect the fetus, so if planning to become pregnant or already pregnant, consult healthcare personnel, and caution is also needed if breastfeeding. The elderly may have decreased kidney function, so starting at a lower dose and regular monitoring are necessary. In case of overdose, while hypoglycemia is rare, there is a risk of lactic acidosis, requiring immediate medical attention. This medication should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed; the surface of the tablet may appear in the stool, which is normal. Finally, this medication may interact with other medications, so if currently taking any other medications, it is essential to inform healthcare personnel, and safety should be ensured through regular monitoring of blood glucose and kidney function.
Lactic acidosis (associated with acute renal impairment, cardiopulmonary disease, septic conditions), symptoms of lactic acidosis (fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, weakness, abdominal pain, low body temperature, hypotension, resistant bradyarrhythmias)
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent exposure to air or moisture. It is important to maintain a storage temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage will help preserve the medication's effectiveness.
