Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood pressure control for essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

Amlodipine or olmesartan medoxomil is used to treat essential hypertension. These medications effectively lower blood pressure and help reduce cardiovascular risk. They are particularly useful for patients who have difficulty controlling blood pressure and are prescribed when blood pressure is not adequately managed with monotherapy. Regular use can prevent complications arising from hypertension. These agents safely dilate blood vessels to improve blood pressure.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Do not take if you have allergies to the active ingredients or similar medications, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have severe liver disease or specific heart conditions, biliary obstruction, are undergoing kidney dialysis, are in shock, have certain types of diabetes, or have severe kidney impairment. Patients with depleted fluid or salt may experience hypotension at the onset of treatment, thus careful monitoring of their condition is necessary, and appropriate measures should be taken if hypotension occurs. Severe aortic stenosis patients should be cautious as rapid vasodilation can lead to hypotension. Patients with severe obstructive coronary artery disease should be careful, as angina or myocardial infarction may worsen during treatment. Use cautiously in patients with congestive heart failure, monitoring for exacerbation of heart failure symptoms during therapy. Patients with impaired renal function may experience further deterioration of renal function from this medication, hence caution is advised. In patients with liver impairment, dosage adjustment and careful monitoring are critical as this medication may remain in the liver for extended periods. Common side effects include dizziness, headache, hypotension, swelling, fatigue, dyspepsia, etc., with rare occurrences of skin rashes or myalgia. This medication may interact with other antihypertensive medications or specific drugs, so it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medications you are taking. This medication is generally not used during pregnancy, and nursing mothers should consider stopping breastfeeding or the medication itself due to potential effects on the baby. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children under 18 years. Elderly patients may experience increased drug concentration due to decreased renal and liver function; starting with a lower dose and careful monitoring of their condition is recommended. Overdose may result in severe hypotension, vasodilation, or tachycardia, requiring immediate medical attention.
