This medication helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgery, and angina in adults with various risk factors for cardiovascular disease and patients with type 2 diabetes. In particular, it lowers the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarctions and strokes in patients with coronary artery disease, as well as the risk of hospitalization due to congestive heart failure. Additionally, this drug is effective in treating hyperlipidemia. It reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia while increasing HDL cholesterol levels to complement dietary therapy. It is also used in patients with dyslipidemia or familial hypercholesterolemia who do not respond to dietary therapy. Furthermore, this medication is utilized to lower cholesterol levels in pediatric patients (ages 10 to 17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. In summary, this medicine is effective for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and treating dyslipidemia.
