Treatment for hypercholesterolemia and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is primarily used as an adjunct for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia when not controlled by diet and exercise. It also helps to lower cholesterol levels in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when used in conjunction with diet or other lipid-lowering therapies. This drug effectively lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis, and is particularly useful in managing cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years who are at high risk. Additionally, it is used as an adjunct to diet in patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. For middle-aged patients with cardiovascular risk factors, it contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases by reducing the risks of stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization. Therefore, it is an effective treatment for controlling cholesterol levels and reducing cardiovascular risks.
Initiate treatment with 5 milligrams once daily at any time of the day, regardless of meals. If a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol is needed, adjust to a maintenance dose, typically 10 milligrams once daily. Dosage adjustments should be made at intervals of 4 weeks or more based on LDL cholesterol levels, therapeutic goals, and the patient's response, with a maximum dose of 20 milligrams per day.
For pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years, administer 5 milligrams to 20 milligrams once daily. Adjust the dosage according to individual therapeutic goals at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to patients with allergies to any of its components, those with severe liver dysfunction, muscle disorders, and certain patients with significantly impaired kidney function. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who may become pregnant, should consult with a doctor before taking this medication. This drug may affect liver function, so patients with a history of liver disease or those who consume large amounts of alcohol should undergo regular liver function tests. Additionally, if symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur, they should immediately inform healthcare providers, and if necessary, discontinue the medication. This drug may elevate blood sugar levels in some patients, so those at high risk for diabetes should monitor their blood sugar regularly. Patients with impaired kidney function, the elderly, or those with a genetic history of muscle disorders should use it with caution. This drug may interact with other medications, so if you are taking any other drugs, you must inform your healthcare provider, especially when it comes to certain antiviral agents, immunosuppressants, antibiotics, and fibrate-class drugs. It is safer not to use this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and women planning to become pregnant should use appropriate contraceptive methods. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; treatment should be symptomatic, with monitoring of liver function and muscle enzyme levels. Caution is needed due to the possibility of dizziness while driving or operating machinery. If severe rashes or allergic reactions occur while taking this medication, discontinue immediately and consult a healthcare professional.
