Effect for blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication helps improve blood sugar control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone or in combination with other drugs as an adjunct to diet and exercise. It is particularly effective for patients whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled; consult a specialist for patients with cardiovascular disease. It is important to take this medication safely by referring to clinical trial information and precautions for use. This drug improves blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes and is used for treatment.
The recommended dosage is 10 mg once daily for monotherapy and additional combination therapy with other glucose-lowering agents such as insulin. If tolerability is good and further blood sugar control is needed, the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily. When co-administering this drug with sulfonylureas or insulin, a dose reduction of these medications may be considered to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication can be taken regardless of meals.
This medication should not be used by those who are allergic to the active ingredient or excipients. It should not be administered to patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic disorders should also avoid taking this medication. Patients with impaired kidney function should use this medication cautiously and have their kidney function tested regularly before and after administration. Particularly, patients with very low kidney function or those undergoing dialysis should not use this medication because its effects are not expected. Patients with chronic heart failure should also carefully decide whether to use this medication based on their kidney function status. When taken with insulin or insulin secretagogues, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, so insulin dosage may need to be adjusted when using this medication. During treatment, watch for symptoms of hypoglycemia, especially if used in combination with other glucose-lowering agents. Genital infections and urinary tract infections may occur, so inform medical personnel immediately if symptoms of infection develop. Hypotension or dehydration due to fluid loss may occur, so especially elderly patients or those with low blood pressure should closely monitor their blood pressure and fluid status. Severe ketoacidosis may develop; seek immediate medical advice if symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, or difficulty breathing occur. Symptoms of liver damage may appear, so have tests if any liver function abnormality symptoms occur. This medication may have mild effects when driving or operating machinery, so caution is especially necessary when there is a risk of hypoglycemia. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should avoid taking this medication and those who are breastfeeding should discontinue use. Children under 18 years of age should not use this medication as its safety and efficacy have not been established.
