Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes

  • Blood sugar control disorders in patients with Type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone and may also be administered in combination with oral hypoglycemics or insulin. It is particularly used in combination with Metformin when blood sugar control is insufficient with monotherapy using a sulfonylurea or Metformin. This helps manage blood sugar levels more effectively, aiding in the improvement of diabetes symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

Adjusted individually for each patient. Swallow whole with more than 1/2 cup of water. Administer orally once a day. Should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. Patients starting on this medication should begin with 1 mg of Glimepiride once daily. The dosage may be increased by 1 mg every 1-2 weeks, and generally, there is very little additional effect at doses above 4 mg. If necessary, up to 6 mg may be administered.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a coma. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients allergic to this medication, sulfonylureas, or sulfonamide medications, or those with severe liver or kidney dysfunction. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and it is recommended to switch to insulin therapy in cases of severe infections, pre- or post-surgery, or severe trauma. Caution should be taken when gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea or vomiting occur, as they may lead to hypoglycemia due to problems with food absorption. This medication contains lactose and should not be given to patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders. During the first week of treatment, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar should be checked frequently and closely monitored. Elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status or irregular eating habits, and those with decreased kidney or liver function are at higher risk for hypoglycemia. When taking this medication with other drugs, interactions may affect blood sugar control, so consultation with a doctor is necessary. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, and decreased consciousness; in case of these symptoms, immediate intake of sugar or informing healthcare personnel is essential. During the use of this medication, regular meals, exercise, and weight management are important, and blood sugar control should be monitored periodically. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment, and it is necessary to quickly consume more than 20g of sugar in such cases. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, and dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients considering decreased kidney function. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in its original container to prevent degradation of quality.
