This medication is used as an adjunct to diet for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It helps in the treatment of patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. It is also recommended for children aged 10 to 17 years with familial hypercholesterolemia and is effective as an adjunct to diet for patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. Notably, it helps reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization in older patients at high risk for cardiovascular diseases. Overall, this drug is used to improve blood lipid levels and protect cardiovascular health.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it can be risky for patients who are allergic to this medication, have severely impaired liver function, have muscle diseases, have severely impaired kidney function, are pregnant or nursing women, and those taking specific medications. It is important to regularly monitor liver function and muscle condition while using this medication. Special caution is required for those with a history of liver disease or heavy alcohol consumption. If symptoms of muscle pain or weakness occur, the patient should inform a healthcare professional immediately and discontinue the medication if necessary. While muscle-related side effects are rare, they can be serious, so careful observation is required. This drug contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance should avoid it. When used in combination with other medications, the blood levels of this drug may increase, leading to a higher risk of muscle-related side effects; therefore, patients should discuss their current medications with their healthcare provider. Women who may become pregnant should use appropriate contraceptive methods and should not use this drug during pregnancy. If a pregnancy occurs, the drug should be discontinued immediately. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so management should involve symptomatic treatment and liver function and muscle enzyme testing. Caution is needed while driving or operating machinery, as dizziness and other symptoms may occur. This medication can rarely cause serious skin reactions, liver damage, or kidney problems in some patients, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to a healthcare professional promptly.
