Treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections and secondary infections of chronic respiratory diseases
This medicine is effective against various bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli, and is used for the treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections. It also improves the symptoms of secondary infections in chronic bronchitis and chronic respiratory diseases, community-acquired pneumonia, and bronchiectasis. It is effective in treating acute pyelonephritis, cystitis, prostatitis, gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis, as well as epididymitis. Furthermore, it is used for a variety of infections including bacterial dysentery, enteritis, infections of the female reproductive organs and appendages, blepharitis, and stye. It is also widely used for other infectious diseases such as otitis media, sinusitis, periodontal tissue inflammation, cholecystitis, and cholangitis. However, this medicine should only be used in certain infections when no other treatment options are available due to the risk of serious adverse reactions. Overall, it is a very useful drug for the treatment of various bacterial infections.
Typically, adults take 100 mg of levofloxacin orally 2 to 3 times a day. In severe cases or insufficient effectiveness, the dose can be increased to 200 mg, 3 times a day. Adjustments may be made based on age and symptoms.
This medicine is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections. However, it can cause serious side effects such as tendinitis, tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, central nervous system disorders, and exacerbation of myasthenia gravis, so caution is needed. If such side effects occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately, and it should not be administered to patients with myasthenia gravis. Also, it should be used only when there are no other treatment options for certain infections such as acute bacterial rhinosinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and acute otitis media. The risk of tendon rupture is increased in elderly patients, patients with renal impairment, solid organ transplant recipients, and patients receiving corticosteroids; therefore, it should not be used in combination with corticosteroids. This medicine may increase the risk of seizures, so it should be used cautiously in patients with epilepsy or central nervous system disorders. Various side effects may occur, including hypersensitivity reactions, severe allergic reactions, neuropsychiatric symptoms (such as anxiety, depression, hallucinations), arrhythmias, renal and hepatic dysfunction, blood abnormalities, gastrointestinal disturbances, musculoskeletal disorders, and skin reactions; thus, any unusual symptoms should be reported to a healthcare professional immediately. Notably, severe skin reactions and aortic aneurysms, as well as valvular heart disease, may occur, so careful observation is required. This medicine may have reduced absorption if taken with certain antacids or medications that contain iron, calcium, etc., so intervals between doses should be maintained. Additionally, combined use with blood glucose control medications may result in blood glucose fluctuations, so careful monitoring of blood glucose levels is necessary. Pregnant or nursing women, growing adolescents under 18 years of age, patients with a history of hypersensitivity to this medicine or quinolone antibiotics should not take this medicine. Elderly patients may experience elevated drug concentrations due to renal function impairment, so careful monitoring of dosage adjustments and the occurrence of side effects is necessary. In case of overdose, central nervous system symptoms and cardiac abnormalities may appear; thus, appropriate treatment should be sought immediately at a medical institution. During the course of treatment with this medicine, strong sunlight or artificial ultraviolet exposure should be avoided, and caution should be exercised while driving or operating machinery if dizziness or drowsiness is experienced.
