Treatment of herpes zoster and genital herpes; suppression of recurrence
This medication is used to treat infections caused by the herpes zoster virus and genital herpes. It is also effective in suppressing recurrent genital herpes. This helps alleviate viral infection symptoms in patients and aids in preventing recurrences.
1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer 250 mg of famciclovir orally 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of initial genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 250 mg of this medication orally 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 125 mg of this medication orally 2 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal period or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 250 mg of this medication orally 2 times daily. Discontinue treatment periodically every 6~12 months to assess whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Because the clearance of this medication is reduced in patients with renal impairment, use caution when adjusting the dose. The dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and initial genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29 250 mg per dose, 1 time daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 125 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, 1 time daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, 2 times daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formula. Men: {body weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis For patients on hemodialysis, administration every 48 hours is preferable, taking the dialysis interval into account. A 4-hour hemodialysis session reduces the plasma concentration of this medication by approximately 75%; therefore, administer this medication immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, a clear recommended dose has not been established.
This medication should not be used by patients who are allergic to certain ingredients or have genetic metabolic disorders such as lactose intolerance. Patients with poor kidney function should use this medication with caution and may require dose adjustments. Side effects such as headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, skin rash, and itching may occur while taking this medication. Rarely, there may be a decrease in platelet count or a rapid deterioration of kidney function, so if any abnormal symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately. This medication does not completely cure genital herpes, so sexual contact should be avoided if symptoms are present during treatment, and safe sexual practices should be maintained. If symptoms such as dizziness or drowsiness arise while taking this medication, avoid driving or operating machinery. In patients with severely impaired liver function, the effectiveness of this medication may be reduced, so caution is advised. This medication can interact with other drugs, so it is important to inform healthcare providers of any medications currently being taken. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should consult a doctor before taking this medication. Children under the age of 18 are not recommended to use this medication as its safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients usually do not require dose adjustments but may need adjustments if kidney function is reduced. In case of overdose, seek medical attention immediately for appropriate treatment, and blood dialysis may lower drug concentration.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container to prevent air and moisture intrusion, preferably in a cool, dry place at a temperature below 30 degrees Celsius.
