Treatment of primary nocturnal enuresis (in children aged 5 years and older) and nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria (in adults)
This medication is used to treat symptoms of primary enuresis and nocturia occurring in children over 5 years old and adult patients with nocturnal symptoms due to nocturia.
Treatment of nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria (adults only) : Administer 0.1mg desmopressin acetate orally at bedtime. If the effect is insufficient after one week, increase the dose to 0.2mg; if the effect remains insufficient, the dose may be increased at one-week intervals up to 0.4mg. If there is no clinical benefit within 4 weeks after dose determination, discontinue treatment. Initiating treatment with this drug is not recommended in patients aged 65 years or older. For elderly patients who require treatment, closely monitor serum sodium levels, etc. (See section 5, General Precautions, under Precautions for Use.)
Primary nocturnal enuresis (age 5 years and older) : Administer 0.2mg desmopressin acetate orally at bedtime. If the effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased to 0.4mg. Whether to continue treatment should be determined after 3 months of administration, following a treatment-free period of at least 1 week.
This medication plays a role in regulating the body's fluid balance, so excessive fluid intake should be avoided, especially in elderly patients or those with certain diseases. Excessive fluid intake can lead to hyponatremia (low sodium concentration in the blood) and water intoxication, which may result in a coma or severe symptoms. This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For instance, patients allergic to this medication or its ingredients, those with severe kidney dysfunction, patients with certain heart diseases, and individuals who genetically cannot break down lactose. Additionally, patients with hypertension or cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease patients, pregnant women or women who might become pregnant, children, and the elderly should exercise special caution when using this medication. These patients are at higher risk of fluid and electrolyte imbalance, thus regular blood tests and monitoring of their condition are necessary. During the use of this medication, fluid intake should be strictly limited, especially minimizing water consumption from 1 hour before administration to 8 hours after administration. If symptoms such as headache, nausea, weight gain, or seizures occur, immediate consultation with medical personnel should be sought to discontinue the medication. This medication may interact with other drugs; hence special caution is required when taken alongside tricyclic antidepressants, diuretics, steroids, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Frequent monitoring of blood sodium levels and electrolyte status is necessary. Pregnant women should use this medication cautiously due to the risk of uterine contractions, and breastfeeding women are advised to discontinue breastfeeding as this medication may be excreted in breast milk. In case of overdose, symptoms such as headache, nausea, seizures, and decreased consciousness may occur. In this case, immediate medical attention should be sought to limit fluid intake and diuretic treatment should be administered as needed.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container to prevent exposure to air or moisture, preferably at room temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees Celsius. Storing it this way helps maintain the medication's effectiveness for a longer time.
