Adult dose

1. Treatment of herpes zoster infection Adults: Administer 250mg of famciclovir orally per dose 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of initial genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 250mg of this medicine orally per dose 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection Adults: Administer 125mg of this medicine orally per dose 2 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal phase or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 250mg of this medicine orally per dose 2 times daily. Discontinue treatment periodically every 6~12 months to assess whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Since the creatinine clearance of this medicine is decreased in patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment should be undertaken with caution. The dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and initial genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250mg per dose 2 times daily 10~29: 250mg per dose once daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 125mg per dose 2 times daily 10~29: 125mg per dose once daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes infection: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) 30~59: 250mg per dose 2 times daily 10~29: 125mg per dose 2 times daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formula. Men: {body weight (kg) × (140-age)} / {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis It is preferable to administer the medicine every 48 hours, taking the dialysis interval into account. Since 4 hours of hemodialysis reduces the plasma concentration of this medicine by approximately 75%, administer this medicine immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is needed for patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, no clear recommended dose has been established.

This medicine should not be used by patients who are allergic to this medicine or its components. Additionally, this medicine contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders should not take it. Patients with impaired renal function should carefully adjust the dose while using this medicine. Side effects such as headache, nausea, dizziness may occur, and especially for elderly patients, central nervous system symptoms like drowsiness or confusion may occur. Skin rash or itching, and rarely severe skin reactions, may occur, so if any unusual symptoms appear, consult a healthcare professional immediately. Reports of liver dysfunction or worsening kidney function have been noted, so caution is required for patients with liver or kidney disease. This medicine does not cure genital herpes, so it is important to avoid sexual contact when symptoms are present and to maintain safe sexual practices. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs during use, avoid driving or operating machinery. In patients with severely decreased liver function, the efficacy may be reduced, so caution is necessary. This medication has relatively few interactions with other drugs, but some medications may affect blood concentration, so informing the healthcare professional of any medications being taken is important. Pregnant or breastfeeding women must consult a doctor before using this medicine, and women who may become pregnant should use it cautiously. Safety and efficacy in children under 18 years have not been established, so use is not recommended. Elderly patients generally do not require dose adjustment, but in cases of renal impairment, adjustments should be made. In case of overdose, seek medical attention immediately for appropriate treatment, and blood dialysis can remove the components of this medicine. This medicine should be stored in a dry place below 30 degrees Celsius and kept out of reach of children. Transferring the medicine to another container may degrade its quality or cause accidents, so caution is warranted.
