Reduction of risk for myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of various cardiovascular diseases. It lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and patients with type 2 diabetes, and also reduces the risk of revascularization and angina. Additionally, it decreases the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, congestive heart failure hospitalization, and angina in patients who already have coronary heart disease. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol and raises HDL cholesterol, thus aiding therapeutic effects. This medication is used as an adjunct to diet in patients with hypercholesterolemia and particularly contributes to the treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia in pediatric patients. Overall, it is used to improve cardiovascular health and effectively manage hyperlipidemia.
The recommended initial dose for the treatment of hyperlipidemia is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily. If greater reductions in LDL cholesterol are required, treatment may start at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered in a dose range of 10 to 80 mg once daily, and initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient characteristics. In patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the administration dose is 10 to 80 mg once daily, either in conjunction with other lipid-lowering therapies (e.g., LDL apheresis) or if such treatments are not possible.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (ages 10 to 17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, and the recommended maximum dose is 20 mg once daily. The dosage may be adjusted according to treatment goals.
This medication may cause muscle-related side effects. If severe muscle pain or weakness occurs, or if there is a significant increase in creatine kinase levels, immediately discontinue use and consult a doctor. There is a risk of serious muscle diseases such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis, so patients with specific infections, surgeries, trauma, or metabolic disorders need to exercise caution. Patients with liver function problems or liver disease should not use this medication, and regular liver function tests should be performed; if abnormalities arise, discontinue use. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication, and women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception during treatment. Children under 10 years old and patients with specific epilepsy or muscle disorders should also not use this medication. Alcoholics or patients with a history of liver disease should use this medication with caution, and elderly patients are also at higher risk for myopathy. This medication may interact with various drugs, so anyone taking other medications should inform their doctor or pharmacist, especially when taking certain antibiotics, antifungals, HIV medications, some antihypertensives, antidiabetics, oral contraceptives, etc. Various side effects may occur, including muscle pain, fatigue, dyspepsia, headache, insomnia, and skin rash; if symptoms persist or are severe, immediate consultation with healthcare providers is advised. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so one should go to the hospital immediately for symptomatic treatment and monitor liver function and muscle condition. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children and kept in its original container for safety. If symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness, fever, or fatigue occur during treatment, inform a doctor immediately, and it is important to regularly check liver and muscle status.
