This medication is used as an adjunct in patients with hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia when diet and exercise alone are insufficient for control. It is especially effective for primary hypercholesterolemia or familial hypercholesterolemia, and mixed hyperlipidemia, as it lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. It is also used in combination with diet in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia and high cholesterol levels to help reduce apolipoprotein B levels. Additionally, it serves as an adjunct to diet for patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. Furthermore, it helps reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and angioplasty in middle-aged and older patients with elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels. Overall, this medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
