This drug is used to treat infections caused by various bacteria. It is effective for respiratory infections such as acute and chronic bronchitis, lobar and bronchial pneumonia, empyema, and lung abscess, as well as for tonsillitis, sinusitis, and otitis media. It also helps treat urinary tract infections such as cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis. The drug is used for infections in various areas, including pelvic infections, gonorrhea, abscesses, soft tissue infections, wound infections, osteomyelitis, and dental infections. This drug is particularly effective against various bacteria, including beta-lactamase producing strains, and helps improve the infection status.

How to take

Adult dose

For upper respiratory infections such as recurrent tonsillitis, lower respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, and skin/soft tissue infections of mild to moderate severity, typically amoxicillin/potassium clavulanate is taken twice daily at 25 mg/3.6 mg per kg of body weight. Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which is broken down into phenylalanine in the body. Therefore, patients with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria should not take this medication. The maximum daily allowable amount of aspartame is limited to less than 40mg/kg as per WHO recommendations, which translates to a maximum of 2.4g per day for adults. Patients who have had allergies to the ingredients in this medicine or beta-lactam antibiotics should not take it. It is also advisable for patients with infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia to avoid this medication due to the risk of rash. Additionally, patients who have had liver dysfunction or jaundice due to this medication or penicillin in the past should avoid taking it. This medication contains lactose, so it should not be administered to patients with genetic problems such as galactose intolerance or lactase deficiency. Patients with poor liver function or severe kidney dysfunction should use this medication cautiously, and those with allergic tendencies should also be careful. If gastrointestinal diseases accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea occur during treatment, caution is needed as drug absorption may not occur properly. This medication may cause gastrointestinal adverse reactions such as diarrhea, gastritis, vomiting, and occasionally severe colitis or acute pancreatitis, so if symptoms occur, it is essential to stop taking the medication immediately and consult a doctor. Symptoms indicative of liver dysfunction have also been reported, so elderly patients or those on long-term treatment should undergo regular liver function tests. Rarely, serious allergic reactions such as skin rash, urticaria, and anaphylactic shock may occur; if these symptoms appear, stop using the medication immediately and seek emergency treatment. Blood tests may reveal abnormalities such as leukopenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia with prolonged use, so regular blood testing is necessary. This medication may affect kidney function, so patients with kidney diseases require regular testing and must stop treatment immediately if abnormalities occur. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should use this medication with caution; particularly, it is advised to avoid use in the first three months of pregnancy. The safety of this medication in children, especially in neonates or premature infants under the age of 2 months, has not been established; therefore, it is crucial to consult a doctor before administration. Elderly patients may experience adverse reactions more easily due to decreased bodily functions; hence, dosage and intervals should be adjusted, and use should be cautious.
