For recurrent tonsillitis or other upper respiratory infections, lower respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, and mild to moderate skin and soft tissue infections, amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium is taken twice daily at 25 mg/3.6 mg per kg of body weight. For severe infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, lower respiratory infections like bronchial pneumonia, and urinary tract infections, amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium is taken twice daily at 45 mg/6.4 mg per kg of body weight.

Precautions

This medication is a beta-lactam antibiotic; individuals allergic to penicillins or cephalosporins may experience severe hypersensitivity reactions and should not take it. Those with infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia are at higher risk of developing rashes and should exercise caution. Patients with a history of liver dysfunction or jaundice due to this medication or penicillin should not use it due to the risk of recurrence. Patients with compromised liver function should use this medication cautiously, as it may worsen liver function. Patients with moderate or severe kidney dysfunction may retain the drug longer, increasing the risk of side effects, thus requiring adjustment in dosage and dosing intervals. Individuals with a history of allergies or a family history of allergies should be particularly cautious before administration, as severe vomiting or diarrhea may impair drug absorption. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur during treatment; in severe cases, serious conditions like pseudomembranous colitis may develop, necessitating immediate discontinuation and consultation with a physician if symptoms are severe. Regular liver function tests are necessary for patients taking the drug long-term, as there may be an increase in liver function test values or, rarely, symptoms of hepatitis and jaundice. Serious skin reactions such as rashes, urticaria, and in severe cases Steven-Johnson syndrome may develop, requiring immediate discontinuation of the medication if a rash occurs. Blood tests may reveal abnormalities such as leukopenia or thrombocytopenia, necessitating further investigation if any unusual symptoms appear. Rarely, central nervous system symptoms such as anxiety, confusion, or seizures may occur, particularly in patients with impaired kidney function. Pregnant or nursing women should always consult a physician before administration, and use should preferably be avoided during the first three months of pregnancy. Elderly patients are at risk of bleeding due to decreased kidney function and vitamin K deficiency, so careful monitoring of dosage and frequency is necessary. This medication may interact with other drugs, so patients taking anticoagulants, certain antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, or anticancer medications must inform their physician or pharmacist. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal symptoms, kidney function abnormalities, or seizures may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention. This medication should be stored refrigerated after preparation and consumed within 7 days, and must be well shaken before use.
