Treatment of gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers, alleviation of symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease and maintenance therapy effect
This medication is effective for gastrointestinal ulcer diseases such as gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers. It also alleviates the symptoms of erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease and is used for long-term maintenance therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease. In patients with gastrointestinal ulcers infected by Helicobacter pylori, it is administered in combination with antibiotics. It is helpful in conditions with pathological gastric acid hypersecretion such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This medication is used to treat various gastrointestinal-related diseases and improve symptoms.
For gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer: 10 mg orally once a day. Depending on symptoms, it may be adjusted to 20 mg orally once a day. Erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease: 10 mg or 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. If not resolved after 8 weeks of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy, it may be supplemented with 10 mg or 20 mg orally twice a day for another 8 weeks.
This medication should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to specific components or benzimidazole derivatives, or with a history of such reactions. Additionally, patients with hypersensitivity to penicillin or macrolide antibiotics should not be treated with this medication when used in combination with amoxicillin or clarithromycin for eradication of Helicobacter pylori. It is also safest not to administer this medication to patients taking certain heart-related medications (terfenadine, cisapride, pimodivir, astemizole), patients taking atazanavir or rilpivirine, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Caution should be exercised in patients with impaired liver function, elderly patients, and those with a history of drug hypersensitivity, and immediate consultation with a physician is advised if adverse reactions occur. This medication may cause various side effects such as skin rash, itching, blood abnormalities, liver function abnormalities, cardiovascular issues, gastrointestinal symptoms, neurological issues, respiratory problems, musculoskeletal pain, and urogenital problems, so caution is necessary. Regular blood tests and liver function tests are recommended especially with long-term use, and the risk of gastrointestinal infections or fractures should also be considered. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery as drowsiness may occur, and it is important to inform healthcare providers if other medications are being taken due to the potential for drug interactions. Because safety has not been established during pregnancy or breastfeeding, it is preferable to avoid use. Additionally, the safety of this medication has not been established in pediatric patients, so it should not be administered to them. In case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes, thus symptomatic treatment and supportive therapy are required, and the tablets should be swallowed whole without chewing or crushing. When storing this medication, keep it in a tightly closed container away from children and do not transfer it to another container. The use of this medication may trigger autoimmune diseases such as drug-induced lupus erythematosus or systemic lupus erythematosus, so if related symptoms appear, it is essential to stop taking the medication immediately and consult a specialist. Lastly, this medication can suppress gastric acid secretion, which may increase the risk of bacterial infections in the stomach; therefore, if symptoms like diarrhea continue, consult a healthcare provider.
