Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used for the treatment of adult patients with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar control is insufficient with diet and exercise alone, especially for those who are overweight. It can be used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin to effectively assist in blood sugar control. This helps to steadily manage blood sugar levels and contributes to reducing the risk of diabetes-related complications.
The usual initial dose is 500 mg Metformin Hydrochloride sustained release tablet once daily with the evening meal. Measure blood sugar levels after one week and adjust the dose accordingly. The dose may be increased weekly by 500 mg up to a maximum of 2000 mg daily, to be taken with the evening meal. If blood sugar control is still not achieved after taking 2000 mg once daily, consider administering 1000 mg twice daily with meals.
This medication can rarely cause severe lactic acidosis, so caution is necessary. Lactic acidosis is a life-threatening condition, and if symptoms appear, immediate medical attention is required. If used with other diabetes medications, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be closely monitored. This medication should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, dehydration, serious infections, or cardiovascular problems. This medication should be temporarily discontinued before acute heart failure or certain radiological examinations, and should not be resumed until normal kidney function is confirmed after the examination. It is not used in patients who are hypersensitive to any component of this drug or in patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or other forms of metabolic acidosis. In cases of severe infections, serious trauma, or before and after surgery, administration should be temporarily suspended, and resumed only after the patient's condition has recovered. Caution is also necessary for patients with poor nutritional status, impaired liver function, or excessive alcohol consumption. During treatment with this medication, irregular meals, intense exercise, or the use of interacting drugs may increase the risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia, and should be managed carefully. Vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, so regular blood tests are recommended, and gastrointestinal disturbances may appear, but most of the time they occur temporarily during the initial treatment. This medication must be swallowed whole, and it is normal for the tablet shell to appear in the stool. When used with other hypoglycemic agents, blood sugar changes should be carefully monitored, and caution is needed as the concentration of the drug may change due to interactions with certain medications. During pregnancy, it may affect the fetus, so it should only be used under a doctor's guidance when necessary, and is not recommended during breastfeeding. Elderly patients are at risk of reduced kidney function, so dose adjustment and regular monitoring of renal function are necessary. Although hypoglycemia is rarely caused by overdose, there is a risk of lactic acidosis, so immediate emergency treatment is required, and hemodialysis may be helpful. This medication does not cause weight gain with long-term use, which is beneficial for weight management, and should be used safely with regular monitoring of blood sugar and kidney function. Keep out of reach of children and take care not to transfer to another container.
