Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone, but if sufficient effectiveness is not achieved with oral hypoglycemic agents, it can be combined with insulin. Additionally, if blood sugar control is difficult with sulfonylureas or monotherapy with metformin, it improves blood sugar management when administered in combination with metformin. This medication effectively helps patients control their blood sugar and plays an important role in diabetes treatment.
Adjust individually for each patient. Swallow whole with more than 1/2 cup of water without chewing it. Administer orally once daily, before breakfast or just before the first meal. It is very important not to skip meals. For initial dosing, begin with 1 mg of glimipiride once daily, and increase by 1 mg every 1-2 weeks. Generally, there are almost no additional effects if given more than 4 mg.
This medication is not for use in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or in a comatose state. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or sulfonylureas or sulfanilamides should not be administered this medication. There is no experience using this medication in patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function; in such cases, switching to insulin therapy is recommended. This medication should not be administered to pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, or to breastfeeding women. Severe infections, pre- and post-surgery, and severe trauma patients may require insulin therapy; therefore, this medication should not be used. Caution should be exercised when gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting occur, as absorption of food may be inadequate, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication contains lactose, and patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic disorders should not take it. In the first week of administration of this medication, there is a higher risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels must be monitored closely. Special caution is needed for elderly patients, those who are malnourished or skip meals, those with unbalanced exercise and carbohydrate intake, those with sudden changes in eating habits, frequent alcohol consumers, patients with weak liver or kidney function, patients with other endocrine disorders, and in cases of drug overdose. Additionally, when taking certain medications such as beta-blockers, hypoglycemic symptoms may not be easily noticeable. This medication has a blood sugar-lowering effect and may lead to hypoglycemia, with symptoms including headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness. If hypoglycemia occurs, it is important to quickly consume sugar-containing foods. There can be rare occurrences of blurred vision, gastrointestinal disturbances, liver function abnormalities, decreased blood cell counts, and allergic reactions, so any abnormal symptoms should be reported to a doctor immediately. In particular, if severe allergic symptoms such as hives or difficulty breathing occur, the medication should be discontinued, and immediate medical attention should be sought. When taking this medication, it is important to take it regularly and maintain diet and exercise therapy. Patients should be well aware of hypoglycemic symptoms and treatments, and be prepared to quickly consume sugar in the event of hypoglycemia. Additionally, special situations such as stress, surgery, or infection may complicate blood sugar control, so consultation with a physician is necessary. When taking other medications, the effectiveness of this medication may be altered, so all medications being taken should be disclosed to the physician or pharmacist. In particular, medications that affect enzymes that break down this drug in the liver, or medications that raise or lower blood sugar levels may have interactions.
