Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Abnormal blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It acts as an adjunct to diet and exercise therapy and can also be used alone. If blood sugar control is inadequate with monotherapy, it can be used in combination with oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. Especially when sufficient control is difficult with monotherapy of sulfonylureas or metformin, it is used in combination with metformin. By utilizing it in multiple ways, it helps effectively control blood sugar and prevent complications of diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

Individual adjustment is made for each patient. Start with 1 mg of glymepride administered once daily. If necessary, increase the dosage by 1 mg every 1 to 2 weeks. If 4 mg daily does not achieve the desired effect, consider switching to insulin therapy or using it in combination with insulin or other oral diabetic medications. This medication should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal with more than half a cup of water, without chewing.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or those in diabetic ketoacidosis or coma. It is also not recommended for those who have had an allergic reaction to this medication or sulfonylureas, or those with severe liver or kidney dysfunction. Women who are pregnant, possibly pregnant, or breastfeeding should avoid taking this medication. Patients with severe infections, or those before and after surgery, or with major trauma should be recommended insulin therapy instead of this medication. Care should be taken when gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting occur, as absorption may be impaired, leading to a risk of hypoglycemia. This medication contains lactose, so those with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders should not take it. In the initial dosing phase, the risk of hypoglycemia is high, so blood sugar and symptoms should be closely monitored, especially in the elderly, those with irregular meals, poor nutritional status, or weak kidney or liver function. Blood sugar control may vary with alcohol consumption or other medications, so be sure to inform healthcare professionals about any other medications or health conditions during treatment. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include headaches, severe hunger, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, and decreased consciousness; if these symptoms occur, immediate intake of sugar or consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. This medication may cause various side effects such as visual disturbances, gastrointestinal symptoms, liver function abnormalities, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions. If any unusual symptoms occur, it is essential to consult a doctor immediately. For blood sugar control, regular meals, exercise, and weight management are important. It is necessary to maintain these lifestyle habits while taking this medication. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, it may be harmful to the fetus or newborn, so insulin therapy is recommended instead of this medication. This medication is not used in children under 18, as safety and efficacy have not been confirmed. Severe hypoglycemia may occur in case of overdose, so immediate medical attention is required if an overdose occurs. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container.
