This medication is used to prevent and continuously treat asthma. It also helps relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It is effective in improving respiratory health in patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily. This medication is to be administered 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals. Patients with asthma or allergic rhinitis should take 10 mg once daily, in the evening, either 1 tablet, 1 pack, or 1 film.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should chew or place 5 mg of montelukast daily once on the tongue and swallow it without water. Children aged 4 to 5 years should chew or place 4 mg of montelukast daily once on the tongue.

Precautions

This medicine contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, so patients with the hereditary condition phenylketonuria should not take it. Aspartame contained in this medication is metabolized into phenylalanine in the body, so administration should be restricted for patients who need to limit phenylalanine intake. Additionally, this medication contains lactose, so patients with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, and glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take it. This medication is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks, thus immediate use of an emergency medication should be used when acute symptoms occur, and this medication should be taken regularly as directed by the attending physician. During the course of treatment, unusual reactions such as dizziness, headache, abdominal pain, fever, cough, and rash may occur; if symptoms are severe or persistent, consult a doctor. Particularly, during the use of this medication, neuropsychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, depression, hallucinations, sleepwalking, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors may occur, so these changes should be reported to healthcare providers immediately. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should refrain from using those medications while taking this drug. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a physician before taking this medication and use it only when necessary. This medication can be used by various age groups, from children to the elderly, but safety and efficacy have not been established for infants under 6 months old or patients with specific genetic disorders. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general symptomatic treatment should be received under the direction of a physician. Since this medication is sensitive to light, it should be taken immediately after opening and stored out of reach of children.
