Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to specific components or have hypersensitivity to hydroxypheine or piperazine derivatives. It should also not be administered to patients with severely impaired kidney function or those undergoing hemodialysis. It is advisable for pregnant women, those who may become pregnant, and breastfeeding women to avoid taking this medication. It should not be used in infants under 1 year of age, and for children under 6 years, it should be given in liquid form rather than in tablet form. Additionally, patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic lactase deficiency should not take this medication. Patients with reduced kidney or liver function, as well as the elderly, should use this medication with caution, as blood concentration may increase. This drug may cause central nervous system symptoms such as drowsiness, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as indigestion, nausea, and abdominal pain may also occur. Rarely, side effects including arrhythmias, blood component changes, allergic reactions, blurred vision, and abnormalities in liver and kidney functions may appear. Symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and otitis media have been frequently reported, particularly in children. As drowsiness or fatigue may occur after taking this medication, caution should be exercised when driving or performing tasks that require concentration. Combining this medication with alcohol or centrally acting depressants may exacerbate drowsiness; thus, avoiding such combinations is preferable. Patients with urinary disorders or those at risk for urinary retention, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, should also exercise caution. Similar to other antihistamines, it is advisable not to take this medication with alcohol, and it may interact with certain other medications; therefore, consultation with a doctor or pharmacist is recommended. Taking this medication with food may slow the absorption rate, but the total absorption amount does not change. During pregnancy, due to insufficient research, it is advisable not to use this medication, and in cases of breastfeeding, it should also be avoided because the component may be secreted in breast milk. For children, it is essential to adjust the dosage considering safety and efficacy before the age of 12, and it should not be used in infants under 1 year. The elderly should start at a lower dose and monitor their condition, adjusting as necessary due to the possibility of increased medication concentration due to reduced kidney function. This medication may interfere with allergy testing; thus, it is suggested to discontinue use 3-5 days prior to testing. In cases of overdose, adults may experience drowsiness, while children may exhibit agitation and restlessness followed by drowsiness. There are no specific antidotes, so treatment should be symptomatic, and gastric lavage may be helpful. Caution is also required as this medication is not effectively removed by hemodialysis.
