This medication helps prevent and manage asthma continuously, and is used to alleviate symptoms caused by seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily. This medication should be administered 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

For children aged 6 to 14 years, take 5 mg of montelukast once daily, either chewed or placed on the tongue to dissolve without water. This medication should be administered 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

Precautions

This medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, and should not be used by patients with the genetic condition phenylketonuria. The intake of aspartame should be limited within the WHO recommended amounts, and caution should be taken to not exceed a maximum of 2.4 grams per day for adults. Additionally, this medication contains lactose and should not be taken by patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic conditions. While taking this medication, allergic reactions or hypersensitivity may occur, so it should be avoided if you have had an allergic reaction to this medication or its components in the past. This medication is not for the treatment of acute asthma attacks; therefore, appropriate emergency medications must be prepared and used in case of acute symptoms. Inhaled corticosteroids should not be abruptly discontinued or replaced by this medication, and should be adjusted gradually under a doctor's guidance. While taking this medication, neuropsychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and behavioral changes may occur; if these symptoms develop, consult a doctor immediately. Patients with a hypersensitivity to aspirin should avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while on this medication, as this medication does not treat bronchoconstriction associated with aspirin-sensitive asthma. In rare cases, patients with asthma taking this medication may exhibit systemic eosinophilia and vasculitis symptoms; therefore, if related symptoms appear, a medical examination should be sought. No significant drug interactions have been reported when this medication is combined with other asthma treatments, but monitoring may be required when used with certain medications as per a doctor's instruction. Safety during pregnancy is not fully established, so it should only be taken after consulting with a doctor when necessary, and caution is also warranted during breastfeeding. It can be used for children and elderly patients, but appropriate dosages and administration methods should be followed according to age, and safety has not been proven for infants under 6 months old. There are no specific antidotes for overdose, so medical attention should be sought immediately for necessary treatment, and this medication should be stored away from direct sunlight as it is sensitive to light and kept out of reach of children. This medication should be taken consistently even when asthma symptoms are not present, and if symptoms worsen or an emergency occurs, consult a doctor immediately.
