Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered as monotherapy, and if blood sugar control is insufficient, it may be given in combination with other medications such as insulin or metformin. It is primarily used with oral hypoglycemic agents to effectively assist in blood sugar control. Therefore, it is effectively used in managing blood sugar levels for patients with type 2 diabetes.
Adjust individually for each patient. Swallow without chewing, with more than half a cup of water. This medication is taken orally once a day. It should be taken before breakfast or just before the first meal. For monotherapy, the initial dose is 1 mg of glimepiride taken once daily, which can be increased by 1 mg every 1-2 weeks if necessary. Generally, doses above 4 mg show little additional effect, but a maximum of 6 mg can be used.
This medicine should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or comatose states. Individuals who are allergic to this drug, its components, or similar class drugs should avoid taking it. There is no prior experience using this drug in patients with severe liver or kidney impairment, so insulin therapy is recommended in such cases. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as those who are breastfeeding, should not take this medication. Patients with severe infections, preoperative or postoperative status, or severe trauma may also require insulin therapy, so caution is needed in using this medication. When experiencing gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting, attention is necessary as food absorption may be insufficient, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication contains lactose; therefore, individuals with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take it. During the first week, the risk of hypoglycemia is high; thus, blood sugar levels must be monitored closely, especially for elderly individuals, those in poor nutritional status, those with irregular meals, or frequent alcohol consumers. Those with impaired kidney or liver function may also respond more sensitively to this medication, requiring dose adjustments. Additionally, if there are thyroid or adrenal function abnormalities, or if taking other medications, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, thus consultation with a physician is necessary. This medication lowers blood sugar levels and symptoms of hypoglycemia may occur, including headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, and reduced consciousness. If hypoglycemia occurs, recovery is usually achieved by consuming sugar, so it is important to always carry sugar. During the time of taking this medication, blurry vision, digestive symptoms, liver function abnormalities, blood-related adverse reactions, and allergic reactions may occur, so if any abnormal symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary. When taking this medication, regular meals, exercise, and weight management must be observed, and the status of blood sugar control should be checked regularly. There may be interactions with other medications, so all medications being taken should be disclosed to the doctor or pharmacist, especially in conjunction with certain antibiotics, antifungals, beta-blockers, and alcohol, which require caution. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consider switching to insulin therapy instead, as this medication may harm the fetus or newborn. The safety and efficacy in children under 18 years have not been established, so its use is generally discouraged. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function, so they should take it cautiously with dose adjustments. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur; immediate treatment at a hospital is necessary, along with potential emergency measures such as inducing vomiting, administering activated charcoal, or intravenous glucose.
