Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It lowers the risk of cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgery, and angina in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease or in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it reduces the risk of hospitalization due to myocardial infarction, stroke, or congestive heart failure in patients who already have coronary heart disease and contributes to the improvement of angina. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it reduces LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol while increasing HDL cholesterol to help regulate blood lipid balance. It is also safely used in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia to effectively lower cholesterol levels. This medication is used to promote cardiovascular health and assist in the management of hyperlipidemia.
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily. Patients requiring greater LDL cholesterol reduction may start at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered within a dosage range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be analyzed and dosages adjusted within 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment and adjusting dosages. The treatment goal is to reduce LDL cholesterol levels; therefore, it is recommended to use LDL cholesterol levels for monitoring treatment response during initiation and assessment. However, if LDL cholesterol levels are not available, total cholesterol levels should be used to monitor treatment response. Patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia should have a dosing regimen of 10 to 80 mg once daily and may be given this medication in conjunction with other lipid-lowering treatments (e.g., LDL apheresis), or when such treatments are not possible.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (ages 10 to 17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg per day, and the recommended maximum dose is 20 mg per day. The dosage should be adjusted according to the treatment goal,
This medication may cause severe muscle abnormalities; therefore, if symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur, usage should be stopped immediately, and a doctor should be consulted. Treatment should be discontinued if severe myopathy or rhabdomyolysis is suspected. Patients with poor kidney function or a history of liver disease should be especially cautious. This medication should not be used in patients who have had allergic reactions, in those with active liver disease, in patients with muscle disorders, pregnant or nursing women, or in children under 10 years of age. Patients with a history of alcohol abuse, liver disease, elderly patients, or those with hypothyroidism, who have a higher risk of muscle abnormalities, require careful examination before administration. This medication may affect liver function; therefore, liver function tests should be conducted regularly before and during treatment. If symptoms of hepatitis (nausea, vomiting, malaise, etc.) occur, the doctor should be notified immediately. Women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception while taking this medication and discontinue use if pregnancy is confirmed. This medication may interact with several drugs; therefore, patients taking other medications must inform their doctor or pharmacist, especially when using certain antibiotics, antifungals, protease inhibitors, etc. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so patients should go to the hospital immediately for treatment based on symptoms, and liver function and muscle condition should be monitored. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children, and it is safest to keep it in the original container.
