Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Blood sugar control issues in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to assist in the regulation of blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is administered as an adjunct to diet and exercise therapies and can also be used as monotherapy. If blood sugar levels are not well-controlled, it may be taken in conjunction with other oral hypoglycemics or insulin. When sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy are ineffective, this medication can be combined with metformin to improve blood sugar control. This helps effectively manage patients' blood sugar and maintain health.

How to take

Adult dose

Adjust individually for each patient. Swallow without chewing with more than 1/2 cup of water. This medication is taken orally once daily before breakfast or right before the first meal. For monotherapy, in patients who have not previously received medication, treatment begins with 1 mg once daily and may be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, additional effects are minimal beyond 4 mg.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or those in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis or coma. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or to sulfonylureas, sulfonamides should also not use it. It is also unsafe for individuals with severe liver or kidney damage, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women. Patients with severe infections, before and after surgery, or with severe trauma are recommended to transition to insulin therapy. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders may be at risk of hypoglycemia due to improper food absorption, requiring caution. During initial dosing, the risk of hypoglycemia is high; therefore, blood sugar changes must be carefully monitored, especially in elderly patients or those with irregular meals or poor nutritional status. Alcohol consumers or individuals with diminished liver or kidney function may also have increased risk of hypoglycemia. This medication lowers blood sugar levels and may elicit hypoglycemic symptoms, which can include headaches, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness, among other symptoms. In the event of hypoglycemia, consuming sugar-containing foods to quickly raise blood sugar levels is crucial. During treatment with this medication, liver abnormalities, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions may occur, warranting immediate consultation with a doctor if any unusual symptoms arise. This medication should be taken regularly along with a proper diet and exercise program, and continuous monitoring of blood sugar levels is necessary. If taken with other medications, interactions may impact blood sugar control, so patients must inform their physician or pharmacist about any concurrent medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medication and should transition to insulin therapy if necessary. Safety in patients under 18 years has not been established, and dosage adjustments may be necessary for the elderly considering kidney function. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate medical treatment, and the medication should be stored out of reach of children.
