How it is given

Adult administration

Administer 3mg by intravenous injection every 3 months over 15 to 30 seconds.

Precautions

This medication must be administered intravenously, and care must be taken to avoid administration into the arteries or around the veins, as tissue damage may occur. It must not be given to patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or untreated hypocalcemia. During the use of this medication, symptoms such as gastroenteritis, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, and constipation may occur. If symptoms persist, it is important to consult a doctor. Musculoskeletal and skin adverse reactions such as muscle pain, joint pain, headache, and rash may also occur. Initial administration may present flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, fatigue, and muscle pain, but they are generally mild and self-resolving. Long-term use of this medication may rarely lead to osteonecrosis of the jaw or surrounding bones in the ear, so oral conditions must be checked before dental treatment. If sudden thigh pain occurs during osteoporosis treatment, the possibility of atypical femoral fractures should be suspected, and immediate evaluation should be done. This medication can temporarily lower serum calcium levels, so it is important to treat hypocalcemia before administration and ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D. It may impact kidney function, so patients with kidney disease or taking medications affecting the kidneys require regular examination and check-ups. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should refrain from using this medication, as safety during pregnancy has not been confirmed. This medication can cause toxicity to kidneys and liver in the event of overdose, so appropriate treatment should be sought immediately if an overdose occurs. This medication should not be mixed with other calcium-containing solutions or medications and must be administered with intravenous saline or glucose solution. After use, the syringe and needle should not be reused and must be disposed of safely.
