This medication helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for vascular surgery, angina, and hospitalization for congestive heart failure in patients with various risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. It also lowers total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in hyperlipidemia patients while increasing HDL-cholesterol, thereby improving blood lipid levels. It is safe to administer to pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia who have a family history or other risk factors to control blood cholesterol levels. This drug functions as an effective dietary supplement for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

Hyperlipidemia The recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily, but for patients requiring greater reductions in LDL-cholesterol levels, it may be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily (only in cases where a reduction of 45% or more in LDL-cholesterol levels is required). This drug is administered once daily in doses ranging from 10 to 80 mg. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized according to therapeutic goals and responses.

Child dose

Precautions

This medication may pose a risk of muscle-related issues, so if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs, usage should be immediately discontinued and a doctor should be informed. This medication should not be used in patients with certain liver diseases, muscle diseases, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, children under 10 years of age, and those taking specific medications. Patients with a history of alcoholism or liver disease, diminished kidney function, hypothyroidism, and those at high risk of myopathy should undergo careful examination before using this medication. Various side effects such as liver function abnormalities, muscle pain, allergic reactions, and gastrointestinal symptoms may occur during the use of this medication, so any symptoms should be reported to healthcare professionals. Particularly, if muscle pain is accompanied by fatigue, fever, or weakness, there may be a risk of muscle damage; consequently, immediate testing is required, and if blood tests reveal elevated muscle enzyme levels, the medication should be discontinued. Since this medication is metabolized in the liver, patients with impaired liver function may require dose adjustments, and if symptoms of hepatitis or liver function abnormalities occur, administration should be stopped immediately. Women planning for pregnancy or who are potentially pregnant must use contraception during treatment, and the medication should be discontinued if pregnancy is confirmed. This medication is not recommended for breastfeeding women, and those who are nursing should avoid taking it. There are numerous drug interactions associated with this medication, and depending on the concomitant medications taken, the risk of myopathy or liver function abnormalities may increase, so all medications currently in use should be disclosed to healthcare professionals. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; treatment should be symptomatic, and liver function and muscle enzyme levels should be checked regularly. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container for safety. Elderly patients or those with kidney disorders are at higher risk for myopathy, so careful monitoring is necessary when using this medication.
