Treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections, secondary infections in chronic respiratory diseases, etc.
This medication is an antibiotic effective against various bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas. It is mainly used to treat complicated skin and soft tissue infections, secondary bacterial infections in chronic bronchitis or chronic lung diseases, community-acquired pneumonia, and infections caused by bronchiectasis. It is also effective for urinary tract infections such as acute pyelonephritis, cystitis, prostatitis, gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis. It is utilized in the treatment of bacterial dysentery, enteritis, infections of the uterus and appendages, inflammatory eye diseases, and corneal ulcers. Additionally, it is used for various inflammatory infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, periodontitis, mastoiditis, cholecystitis, and cholangitis, particularly in cases that are complicated or difficult to treat otherwise. This medication should be used cautiously under the judgment of the prescribing physician due to the potential for serious adverse reactions and is widely used for overall bacterial infection treatment.
Typically, for adults, levofloxacin is administered orally at a dose of 100 mg, 2 to 3 times a day. For patients with severe infections or inadequate response, 200 mg may be given 3 times a day. Adjustments should be made according to age and symptoms.
This medication belongs to a specific class of antibiotics and may cause tendon-related problems such as tendinitis or tendon rupture, requiring caution. It may also worsen symptoms in patients with peripheral neuropathy, central nervous system abnormalities, or severe myasthenia gravis. If serious adverse reactions occur, immediate discontinuation is necessary, and it should not be administered to patients with a history of myasthenia gravis. This medication is used only for specific bacterial infections and should be used only when other treatment options are not available. The risk of tendon rupture is increased in elderly patients, those with kidney dysfunction, and those taking corticosteroids concurrently. Therefore, it should not be used with corticosteroids, and immediate discontinuation and rest are necessary if tendon pain or inflammation occurs. It can increase the risk of seizures, so patients with epilepsy or a history of seizures should use it with caution. Serious allergic reactions or skin reactions may occur due to hypersensitivity; if such symptoms occur, immediate cessation of use is necessary. Dizziness, drowsiness, and visual disturbances can occur, necessitating caution when driving or operating machinery. When used with blood glucose control medications, blood sugar levels may rise or fall excessively, so monitoring of blood sugar is essential. This medication should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women, nor by growing children or adolescents. Elderly patients may have increased drug concentrations due to decreased kidney function, necessitating caution with dose adjustments and intervals. Overdose can cause central nervous system symptoms and cardiac rhythm disturbances, requiring immediate treatment and monitoring. This medication may interact with other drugs, especially antacids, iron preparations, and anticoagulants, so caution is necessary when taken together. Avoid strong sunlight or artificial UV exposure during treatment, and immediately discontinue use if photosensitive reactions occur. If tendon pain or neurological symptoms develop during treatment, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is required, as prolonged or permanent side effects may occur.
