Treatment of Parkinson's disease; relief of antipsychotic-induced extrapyramidal symptoms
This medication improves symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, fatigue, weakness, and apathy caused by encephalitis, atherosclerotic, and idiopathic Parkinson's disease. It is also used to relieve extrapyramidal symptoms such as dystonia, abnormal movements, and akathisia caused by the use of antipsychotic drugs (phenothiazines, reserpine, etc.). Therefore, it is an effective medication for treating symptoms of movement disorders due to Parkinson's disease and medication.
1. Parkinson's disease The optimal dose varies by patient; determine the dosage and administration accordingly. Young adult patients and patients with postencephalitic Parkinson's disease may require higher doses than elderly patients and patients with arteriosclerotic Parkinson's disease. 1) Patients not receiving other drug therapy: Initially, administer procyclidine hydrochloride 2.5 mg orally 3 times daily after meals. If the patient tolerates it well, gradually increase to 5 mg per dose 3 times daily, or administer 5 mg only with the last dose. In some cases, a lower dose may provide a better therapeutic effect. If patients sometimes have difficulty adhering to bedtime dosing, it is preferable to omit the bedtime dose and divide the daily dose evenly during the day. To minimize adverse reactions, take this medicine during or after meals. 2) Switching from another drug therapy to procyclidine hydrochloride therapy In patients who have been continuously receiving another medicine, gradually switch all or part of the other medicine to this medicine at a dose of 2.5 mg per dose 3 times daily. Gradually increase the dose of this medicine as needed while correspondingly reducing or discontinuing the other medicine until the switch is complete. 2. Extrapyramidal symptoms caused by antipsychotics (phenothiazines, reserpine, etc.) When treating extrapyramidal symptoms caused by antipsychotics during treatment of psychiatric patients, adjust the dose according to the severity of adverse reactions associated with the antipsychotic. In general, the higher the antipsychotic dose, the more severe symptoms such as rigidity and tremor. Therefore, adjust the dose to meet each patient's needs and minimize symptoms as much as possible. To establish the daily dose of this medicine, start with 2.5 mg per dose 3 times daily and increase by up to 2.5 mg per day until symptoms improve. In most cases, 10~20 mg per day of this medicine provides a good effect.
