This medication is used to prevent and continuously treat asthma. It is also effective in alleviating the symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It helps improve symptoms for those suffering from asthma and allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication should be taken once daily; for asthma patients, it should be taken in the evening. For allergic rhinitis patients, the timing of administration should be adjusted according to the patient’s condition. For patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis, take 1 tablet once daily in the evening. Administer 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should take 5 mg of montelukast once daily. Administer 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.

Precautions

This medication may affect the central nervous system, potentially causing various psychiatric abnormalities such as agitation, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a doctor. Additionally, this medication contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, and should not be taken by patients with phenylketonuria. This medication should also not be used by patients who cannot digest lactose due to certain genetic issues. For asthma patients, this medication is not intended to treat acute attacks, so a separate emergency medication should always be kept on hand during acute symptoms. Patients with an aspirin hypersensitivity must not take aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while on this medication. During treatment with this medication, do not arbitrarily reduce or discontinue the dosage of other asthma medications as directed by a physician. If pregnant or breastfeeding, this medication should only be taken after consulting a doctor and should only be used when absolutely necessary. Children and the elderly can also use this medication, but especially children should follow the appropriate dosage and usage according to their age, and safety has not been established for infants under 6 months. In case of overdose, follow general treatment based on symptoms, as there is no specific antidote. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and it is advisable not to transfer it to other containers. If asthma symptoms worsen or new psychiatric symptoms appear while taking this medication, consult a doctor immediately.
