How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken once a day, but asthma patients should take it in the evening, and patients with allergic rhinitis should determine the dosing time according to their condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet in the evening once a day. This medication should be administered 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years take 5 mg of montelukast orally once a day, to be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

Precautions

This medication is used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis. During the course of taking this medication, neuropsychiatric side effects may occur, so patients and caregivers should closely monitor changes such as anxiety, agitation, aggressive behavior, depression, sleep disturbances, hallucinations, and suicidal thoughts. If any of these symptoms occur, discontinue the medication immediately and consult a physician; in most cases, symptoms improve after stopping the medication. This medication contains aspartame as an artificial sweetener, and patients with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria should avoid it. Additionally, patients who cannot digest lactose should not take this medication. This medication is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks; separate emergency medication should be used during acute symptoms. In cases where asthma symptoms are triggered by exercise, this medication should not be used alone; other treatments such as inhaled bronchodilators should be used concurrently. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should not take these medications together with this medication. Taking this medication may result in various side effects such as fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, cough, and rash, so consult a physician if any unusual symptoms are noticed. If pregnant or breastfeeding, it is essential to consult a physician before taking this medication and use it only when necessary. For children, it should be used according to age groups for which safety and efficacy have been demonstrated, and safety has not been established in infants younger than 6 months. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general treatment should be sought according to symptoms and consult a physician.
