Therefore, this medication can help manage blood sugar levels stably and improve diabetes symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 500 mg of Metformin Hydrochloride extended-release tablet once daily with the evening meal. Measure blood sugar levels after one week to adjust the dosage. Increase the dosage incrementally by 500 mg weekly, with a maximum of up to 2000 mg daily with the evening meal. If blood sugar is not controlled at 2000 mg daily, consider administering 1000 mg twice daily with meals.

Precautions

This medication can, although rarely, cause a dangerous condition called lactic acidosis, which can be life-threatening. Caution is necessary as hypoglycemia may occur when used in combination with other diabetes medications. It should not be used in patients with moderate to severe kidney dysfunction or in acute conditions like dehydration, severe infection, or heart failure. The administration of this medication must be temporarily suspended before and after tests using iodinated contrast media and restarted only after kidney function has returned to normal. This medication is contraindicated in patients with allergic reactions to its components or those with type 1 diabetes or acute metabolic acidosis. Patients with severe infections, trauma, or undergoing surgery should pause treatment and resume once their condition improves. Patients with poor nutritional status, impaired liver function, or excessive alcohol consumption should also use this medication with caution. Careful administration is required for patients with irregular blood sugar control or strenuous exercise, and those taking interacting medications. This medication may cause serious side effects like gastrointestinal disorders, vitamin B12 deficiency, and rarely lactic acidosis; thus, healthcare professionals should be notified immediately if symptoms occur. Kidney function should be regularly monitored to reduce the risk of accumulation and side effects, especially in the elderly or those with deteriorating kidney function. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it may increase the risk of side effects. Usage during pregnancy should consider the impact on the fetus, and during breastfeeding, a consultation with a doctor is necessary before making a decision. Its safety in children is not established, so its use is not recommended. In cases of overdose, emergency treatment is necessary as the drug can be removed through blood dialysis. During treatment with this medication, blood sugar control can be achieved without weight gain, but regular blood sugar tests and kidney function tests should be conducted for safe management. The tablet should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed, and the tablet coating may be expelled without concern. There may be interactions with other medications, so inform healthcare personnel of any ongoing treatments. Regular meals, exercise, and periodic check-ups are crucial during treatment, and any unusual symptoms should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately.
