Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia, treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Adults with several risk factors such as elderly age, smoking, hypertension, and low HDL cholesterol may have a reduced risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and complications after vascular surgeries. Patients with type 2 diabetes may also lower various risks associated with heart diseases. For patients with pre-existing coronary heart disease, it has been shown to reduce the risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, congestive heart failure, and angina pectoris. Moreover, it reduces total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in patients with hyperlipidemia and improves blood lipid levels when combined with a diet. It is also applicable for children with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia to lower cholesterol levels.
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily; however, for patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol levels, the starting dose can be 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered in the dosage range of 10 - 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on therapeutic goals and patient response.
For pediatric patients (ages 10 - 17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, and the recommended maximum dose is 20 mg once daily. The dosage should be adjusted according to the individual therapeutic goals.
This medication may cause muscle symptoms; if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs, or if there is a significant elevation in creatine kinase levels, discontinue use immediately. There is a risk of kidney problems in cases of suspected severe myopathy or rhabdomyolysis.
