This medication is used for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men.

How to take

Adult dose

Once a week, take 1 tablet (70 mg/2800 IU or 70 mg/5600 IU) in the morning with a sufficient amount of water at least 30 minutes before consuming food, beverages, or other medications. The optimal dosage for most osteoporosis patients is 70 mg/5600 IU once a week. After taking the medication, do not lie down for at least 30 minutes and until the first food intake.

Child dose

Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents (under 18 years old) have not been established.

Precautions

This medication may irritate the mucosa of the upper gastrointestinal tract, leading to issues such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, and esophageal erosion. In severe cases, it could cause esophageal obstruction or perforation, so if symptoms such as dysphagia, odynophagia, pain behind the sternum, or heartburn occur during use, stop taking it and consult a doctor. This medication must be taken with plenty of water and should not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. Patients with difficulty in esophageal clearance, those who cannot sit or stand upright for at least 30 minutes, patients with allergies to any component of this medication, patients with hypocalcemia, or those with certain genetic metabolic disorders should not take this medication. While taking this medication, gastrointestinal-related symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, dyspepsia, constipation, diarrhea, gastric acid reflux, and esophagitis may occur, along with musculoskeletal pain, headache, dizziness, and taste alteration. Taking this medication with calcium supplements or antacids can hinder absorption, so a minimum interval of at least 30 minutes should be maintained. Additionally, caution should be exercised when used in conjunction with aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, as gastrointestinal side effects may increase. During pregnancy, there is a potential risk to the fetus, so it should only be used when absolutely necessary; during breastfeeding, it should also be used cautiously. This medication is not to be used in children, and special caution is required for elderly patients or those with severely impaired kidney function. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypocalcemia or gastrointestinal irritation may appear, and immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary; inducing vomiting should be avoided, and the patient should be kept upright. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and transferring to another container could lead to degradation of quality or accidents, so caution is advised.

Side effects and when to seek care immediately

Serious side effects

Urticaria, angioedema, symptoms of hypocalcemia, esophagitis, esophageal erosion, esophageal stricture, esophageal perforation, gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers accompanied by severe bleeding, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, severe bone, joint and muscle pain, hypocalcemia, jaundice, symptoms related to renal failure.

Mild side effects

Abdominal pain, nausea, dyspepsia, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, gastric acid reflux, esophageal ulcer, vomiting, dysphagia, abdominal distension, gastritis, musculoskeletal (bone, muscle, or joint) pain, muscle cramps, headache, dizziness, taste abnormalities, rash, itching, hair loss, rhinitis.

Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.

Storage

This medication is sensitive to air and moisture, so it should be stored in a tightly sealed container. Also, it is important to avoid direct sunlight and store it at room temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage will help maintain the effectiveness of the medication.
