This medication is used for the treatment of chronic constipation in adults who have not had symptom improvement despite using laxatives.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered orally and can be taken at any time during the day regardless of meals. Adults should take 2mg once daily. Elderly patients aged 65 years and older should start with a dosage of 1mg once daily and may increase to 2mg once daily if necessary. For patients with severe renal impairment, 1mg should be given once daily; no dosage adjustment is needed for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. For patients with severe liver impairment, a dosage of 1mg once daily is recommended.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, individuals allergic to the active ingredient or excipients of this medication, patients with severely impaired kidney function requiring dialysis, and patients with serious bowel issues may be at risk from using this medication. Moreover, patients with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance should also avoid this medication. In patients with severe renal impairment, the dosage of this medication should be reduced and administered cautiously. Patients with other serious conditions affecting the liver, heart, lungs, or nervous system should also be careful when using this medication. In particular, those with a history of arrhythmias or ischemic heart disease should use this medication with caution. Taking this medication may commonly cause gastrointestinal disturbances such as headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. Most side effects are mild and often resolve naturally over time. Additionally, symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and palpitations may also occur, so if symptoms are severe, consult a physician. Severe diarrhea may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, so it is advisable to use additional contraceptive methods while taking this medication. Furthermore, symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts may arise during the use of this medication, so any changes in mood or behavior should be promptly reported to healthcare professionals. When used with other medications, interactions are generally minimal; however, caution is necessary as drug concentrations may change when used with certain medications.
