Relief of severe to moderate acute and chronic pain (such as pain from cancer, diagnosis, and post-surgery)
This medication is used to relieve severe and moderate acute and chronic pain, especially pain caused by various cancers and pain that occurs after diagnosis and surgery.
As tramadol hydrochloride, the initial intravenous or intramuscular dose is 50-100mg, and can be repeated every 4-5 hours as needed. The maximum daily dose can reach 400mg.
This medication can cause seizures if taken in excess of the recommended dosage. Especially, patients with epilepsy or those at risk of seizures should use this medicine only when absolutely necessary. Prolonged use may lead to psychological and physical dependence, therefore in patients with a history of substance abuse or dependence, it should be strictly managed and administered for a short period of time. In the case of an injectable form, glass fragments may mix upon cutting the container, so extra caution is required when using it for children or the elderly. Taking this drug in conjunction with alcohol or central nervous system depressants can result in severe sedation, respiratory depression, coma, or even death, so concurrent use should be avoided or administered at minimal doses for a short period if absolutely necessary, and patients must be monitored closely. Patients with rapid metabolism of this drug due to genetic characteristics may experience an increased risk of respiratory depression due to higher than expected concentrations, thus requiring dose adjustments and careful monitoring. This medicine should not be administered to children under the age of 12 or adolescents under 18 who have had tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy. For adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18, use should be avoided if there are risk factors. This drug should not be administered to patients with acute alcohol intoxication, central nervous system drug intoxication, severe respiratory depression, head trauma, those taking MAO inhibitors, patients with severe liver or kidney impairment, pregnant or lactating women, or patients with certain allergies. Occasionally, symptoms such as drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting may occur, so sufficient rest is required after administration, and driving or operating dangerous machinery should be avoided. Long-term use of this medication can result in tolerance requiring increased dosages, and sudden discontinuation may result in withdrawal symptoms, necessitating gradual dose reduction. Care must be taken regarding drug interactions, particularly when used in conjunction with central nervous system depressants, antidepressants, and antipsychotics, as the risk of sedation and respiratory depression may increase, so follow the doctor's instructions. It is safest for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding not to use this medication, as it may transfer to the baby through breast milk and cause serious side effects. In case of overdose, severe respiratory depression, seizures, coma, and other serious symptoms may occur, requiring immediate emergency action, and naloxone may be used as an antidote if necessary. Elderly patients (75 years and older) may have increased blood concentrations of this drug, so dosage adjustments are necessary. During treatment with this drug, closely monitor for adverse reactions, and if any abnormal symptoms arise, consult a medical professional immediately.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent contact with air and should be kept at room temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees. Storing it this way can maintain the drug's effectiveness and ensure safe use.
